Ben M, it is easy to fall into the trap of just buying enough.
If you "know" you will not go beyond one operator/500L and you deffo want new then the question of how many seats versus parking space comes into play.
My 56 Doblo bought new ran with a 400L and could take a 500 with one operator. So a Connect or Berlingo or new shape Doblo would be fine.
However if you see yourself going two men 650 plus you need a minimum of 1000kg, probably 1100/1200kg payload.
Funnily enough, if it's just you and the new issue isn't a biggie and 3 seats useful then a late pre 2007 (56/07plate were the last) Scudo/Expert/Dispatch with 815/900kg payload is the perfect choice.
I know of so many windies using these vans to great success.

What the transit custom like any good ? Been looking at them

Ben, "round our way" (besides Mr and Mrs Tosh with a 500 in his pre 2007 Pug Expert) - I have actively helped four windies (buy at auction or put in a tank) with this shape of van between 02 and 06. They are hubby/wife teams or sole operators and they all have 400 - 650 tanks. (Tho with a 900kg payload the 650 cannot legally be filled beyond about 550 when two up.)
I also know a guy who runs 3 newer shape 07 plates scudo's with 1000kg and a 650 on board and another with a newer shape and a 500 on board.
Of course brand new you can get a 1200 version of the scudo.
Me? I bought a Hyundai iload this time last year with a 650 plus a barrel and two up I'm near it's 1060kg limit. Cannot fault it (nor should I after just 1 yr and 5000 miles) but then I cannot fault my now 6yr old doblo which we still run.

I got a bit of a cob on and will probably get slaughtered for this, but seriously, your gonna spend £1,000s on a brand new van and you seriously need to ask which one takes a 500 litre tank.
I can understand best pole/squeegee/hose/ but flipping heck, next it'll be what's the best house to buy for a static ibc. ???
Blimey if you've got 10k or access to the credit, you must know what you want.
Ok then boys and girls, take your best shot :P :P :P

No fun in that, it'd be like hitting a barn door at ten paces. :-*

I'd recommend getting either a dispatch/expert/scudo or a primastar/vivaro/trafic. All good vans and new they come in 1000kg or 1200kg payloads. You can often get a really good deal on the 1000kg models as there are always excess models floating around and that is all you will need. The payload should be enough and you won't be cramped.
Simon.

We have just got the new Ford Custom, very good had two day's.
My Transit was in at the dealers today for a minor recall,I took the opportunity to have a look at the new Custom just out of curiousity, they look really good, although I think the load space is slightly smaller than its predecessor.

thanks guys :)

For economy and handling it is always good to get something with a bit of 'leeway' on the payload.
We run a 650 litre system and have had this fitted in a Transporter T32 T5 102PS for the last four years, great solid van - but I cannot really recommend it fully due to being FWD with all of that weight in the rear. Down here in rural Cornwall with very narrow and steep lanes it has really struggled with traction and power.
We have just changed vans and bought a Mercedes Vito Automatic 3.0 V6 RWD Dual-Liner (rear seats removed and stored). This is also galvanized and feels every bit as solid as the T5. We have fitted a new 650 litre system in the back. This is by far a better vehicle for our specific needs than the Transporter. It is only about 2mpg more thirsty than the transporter and is so much better on the roads we need to access. It also drives better, feels more car like and far more comfortable. For me this is the best works vehicle I have used so far.

Thank you Alex but i should have said a van around £12,000 not £ 30000! ;D ;D

I had a t30 130 5cyl( like alex said, the 102bhp 4cyl are rubbish with a load)and with a 650ltr in the back and you could race cars with it. If you're mainly domestic then they are pointless, too big to get in and out of driveways and country lanes scrape the sides. For a one man set up then a connect 230 is the van too have. 900kg payload and just the right size. Don't worry about your ego,get something that does the job

Didn't spend that!
Bought it at about 15months old with 24,000 miles on the clock in immaculate condition (ex Mercedes manager's vehicle) for about £18,000. I thought that this was a good buy.

which system have you got Alex? grippa?
-
My iload is RWD (2500cc diesel - 115bhp but a massive torque figure of 343nm) and cost less than £16K brand new with a 5year warranty.

The iLoad is a good van & I like them. We did look at these 4 years ago when we got the Transporter. However they were not galvanized and the payload was going to be a little tight for us.

I have the GrippaMax 650 delivery-only two-man system.
