Title: Employees and neck tattoos.
Post by: roundbuilder on February 21, 2013, 08:17:26 am
Would you employ a guy who is fast, does a good job, all round hard worker but has tattoo's on he's kneck??
What would your views be on this. Im normally non judgemental as i employ the bloke but i have had a few comments on how he looks scary/rough from customers lately. He has since working for me over the last 2 years had 3 different tattoos on back and both sides of he's kneck and has started me wondering if its a good look or not from a customers angle?? If i was taking interviews i defo wouldnt take on the bloke covered in kneck tattoos!!  Would you??.

If I had a choice between two good workers and one had neck tattoos and the other didn't, I'd choose the guy without the tattoos.

Prejudice still exists.  My Mother is highly prejudiced; she often shocks me with the rubbish she comes out with (non PC baby boomer generation) and she reckons tattoos are a way of telling people you're thick without opening your mouth.

And in a sensitive service occupation such as ours, where we've access to people's property, I think trying to give the best perception of ourselves to our customers is important.  However, I do work with a Welsh woman (I know I know).  :-X

It is about customers perception , People judge far to quickly my wife is one of the nicest people you will ever meet .

When the summer comes you should see the shocked look on peoples faces when they see her tattoos .

I have them as well but keep them covered most of the time as people would judge me my wife always discourages me from gaving a neck tattoo. Mike

I don't like tattoos myself, but if your man has proven his worth, your customers have no reasonable grounds for complaint about his work, and you are happy with him I don't see a problem.

If he works well, and you're not losing work because of it, then it's no problem. Any worker who is good at what they do and cause no problems are an asset. I've had some right dodgey looking blokes working for me in the past, I never really bothered about how customers perceive them as long as I don't lose money.

From what I've read on here about employees, just be happy the bloke does what you pay him for and does it well. If you let him go, then let some of the guys on here know, I'm sure he won't have to wait long for a new job.

Talk to the concerned customers about it; explain he's ok, even if he looks scary. Let him talk to them and let the customers stroke him, if they're brave enough  ;D.
You could also tell the customers he can spell 'neck'.

He is now employed and doing a great job.  Peoples perception will not change especially amongst the mature lot.  Yes, in most cases even if he does a good job you may also lose jobs because of the way he looks.  Rather than get rid of him just ask him to cover up his tatoos or to wear a shirt or polo that may cover most or part of it.
It is still cold and you may want him to try and get to know the custy's a little bit and practice a little customer service by put them at ease.  Summer is round the corner.  He will be fully exposed then.

You should count yourself lucky to have someone hard working like that.

I would pick a hard / good worker over appearances any day.

Gauge people's reaction. If they look a bit scared or even mention it.
Make a joke of it. Say something like 'I stopped him getting a spiders web over his whole face, that was the compromise'.
Introduce him too. They may only see him through the glass or from afar. Once they know he's a nice guy (if he is) it could be a memorable selling point.
Customer: 'my windows are cleaned by ..., the guy with the ...tattooed on his neck, he does a great job'
There will always be prejudice, just don't give any ammunition for it.

tatts are so common nowadays,it would not stop me giving a worker a start  . one of my female workers has quite a few ,however iv told her no getting any on the front of her face or else.

i understand the concern about tattoos around neck and hands, and yes some of the older custys may worry, and apperance is important in any service job but also attitude is as well, i have seen often other windys smoking, swearing while working shouting at each other while on ladders, now this is more important.  iv picked up some jobs because of these reasons.  So wouldnt worry about tattoos if hes nice to custys bit chatty then they will get used to it.

The whole tattoo thing is quite funny. People without them like to talk/comment/judge those with them but those with them just get on with life and don't comment about our lack of ink.
If he was a good worker then keep him, he will be worth the odd biggot who drops you because of them.
Having said that, if he got a "cut here" across his neck it would be one tat too far.

Im not against tattoos at all, i have a whole sleeve done of planets and galaxies on my arm!, i love ink but have always been against neck, hands and face etc due to the thoughts and awkwardness of others around.
im happy with the guy, he is a mate as well as a good worker, its where 3 different customers have now along the lines of the rough looking guy with tattoos on hes neck when talking about him, it has made me think about how i dont judge and how others do thats all. Im not going to get rid of him at all, simply asking you guys if you have lads with neck tattoos working for you and how you feel that they are representing your company.

might be an asset, the mean look.  if a custy has annoyed you some , you could watch thru a windows to see the customers face expression while your worker kicks hard at the front door.
