For those of you that also distribute other peoples leaflets.
When I did it before my people used to complain about the time it took to sort the leaflets before they went out. Said it took up their evenings.
I did try to resarch to see how leaflet companies manage but could find nothing.
Is it just a case of doing it by hand or is there a machine I do not know about?

Do you mean sorting into piles of 1000?

this is how the professional delivery companies sort there leaflets, big campaigns go on the left ;D

our local guy just uses a paper bag ( that paper boys carry newspapers in... not an actual bag made of paper ;) )
they have 2 compartments, so they put a leaflet in each side, then as they approach the door they pull each one out and stick them in the letter box

Same as Mike, I use a bag with compartments stuff enough of each leaflet in to keep me going for a couple of hours before setting out.
No need to pre-count, what i do is have a clicker (the type doormen use to count people coming into nightclubs etc) which i hold in one hand and then i get the most awkward leaflet out first roll it rather than fold it so it will unfold when pushed through letterbox and then add other leaflets to be delivered. :)

haha classic - or if that's too much trouble, the straightforward bush drop:

Many Thanks think I have an idea based on your thoughts. afterall they have time to sort as they walk.
Now Ive just got to stop him folding my leaflet into quarters to put through door.
