Title: protectakote or not?
Post by: windiewasher on February 08, 2013, 02:21:54 pm
Do you need to take ply lining up or can you go over the ply lining?
Cheers

Take it up IMO so your protecting the van and not the ply.

It would be easier to paint over the ply with the paint,    try and make sure you seal all the edges, and make sure the wood is sealed prior to painting
Also use a brush as it doesn't clump, and once finished is a good idea to use a rubber mat as well,, as this will stop the paint from chipping, and prolong the life of the paint.

It is all down to good preparation, and you should give yourself at least a couple of days to do the job.

Its been fine in our 3 vans never had it chip at all, As long as its prepped right, I used 3 coats per van.

You'd be surprised how much rubbish is under the ply. Take it up, clean it within an inch of it's life, then put 3 coats of protecta kote down, drying time in between. Check the sheet that comes with it. It's brilliant stuff, but such a pain to put on. If you are scared of hard work and getting a bit dizzy from the fumes, don't start.  ;D

Pics below show 1st, 2nd, 2rd coats, you can see the state the van was in after I removed the plylining! (previous owner) Nice result though, it was my second van, and it's totally worth it. Gives you that warm fuzzy feeling inside, knowing you just did one heck of a nice job.
You get some water on it, it runs straight to the front, and forms a small puddle and you just wipe it up.

I agree that lifting the ply is the best way to go about it. Give the floor a damn good clean the go over it with wire wool to key the surface. I put on a couple of coats two odd years ago and it's still looking good. The way it's going I won't have to do any touching up before I sell the van in a couple of years time.

Bought a 61 plate trafic last year and was really worried about 'painting' it. It was already well ply lined but I was reccomended to remove and then coat as then you don have to worry about water getting under the coated ply and also when you come to sell the van you can just put the old ply back in.

I then bought some of that rubber matting (the type with the holes in) from eBay. I covered the entire floor. Not only does it protect, it also looks better than bare protectacoat.

Clean floor and lightly sand to remove shine then apply
3 coats of protectakote. Allow to dry between each coat, you will need
3 brushes get cheap ones.
The only thing that would scrape it is the hose reel so I have a small rubber mat to
set it on.
Make sure you remove the rubber seals around the doors and paint under them at floor level
as well, because these are prone to rust.

Definately take the ply flooring up first. If water gets in there via a chip then it rots the wood underneath & eventually your van starts to stink.... Happened to a mate of mine.

Its a time consuming job but its better to do it right first time.

The instructions say that you can do either way, I know a guy that has had it on ply for over 5 years and he's happy.  I did it straight on the floor, my reasoning is why stick ply in a van and lessen the pay load.
