in general a sole trader can quite easily do his own accounts me and ian101 use sage.com to do ours, cost £7.00 a month
any help you need is available thru HMRC website
unless you have a very complicated business structure i dont see the need to have one
it might be better to have a book keeper than an accountant
if you do need an accountant i know of one in Runcorn approximately £30.00 a month
cheers bob

They give you A big fat bill....
You give him a list of
Income and outgoings
That's it
They then fill out tax return for you, takes them 15mins
If you are a sole trader, and charge you £250 plus vat min.
Hope this helps

Mine's just charged £90 + for submitting a blank "no trading" Tax Return for 2011 - 2012 'cos I started in May 2012 but HMRC told me I had to register as self-employed when I started buying the van and kit etc.. in March 2012 if I wanted to claim back any capital expenditure on the money spent.
Too complicated for me when starting out maybe when I get up and running will have time to sort out my own tax return.

You don't need an accountant if your just self employed
-
I have a accountant and i wouldn't do it without one peace of mind that things are being done right.

I do things right my books are kept in order every day so the accounting takes care of itself it takes me 15 mins to file an online tax return same as the accountant only I don't have to hand over 300 quid.

Paul, if you want i can give you the contact details of mine, he is based in Prescot so not to far from you, he will communicate either by person, phone or e-mail. He is very good mate, sorted all my stuff out now for the last few years.

You have to have 'meetings' with your accountant otherwise you don't sound very big on forums.
You don't have to have an accountant if you don't want too but they are very quick at filling out your tax form and jiggling your expenses around to give the best results and provided you are honest then they could be an asset should you get investigated.
