I have a spreadsheet in excel and i record every payment received.

I have been told that having a brakedown of where the money comes from is a good idea in case the tax man wants the investigate you  ;) ;)

But i would speak to you accountant see what he/she says

My first visit with the Receiver when I started window cleaning was that they required a list of names and address of all work done and pricing.

I didn't have an issue with that as being in sales and after sales service all my working life, record keeping of customer details was expected. We weren't selling tins of baked beans at a little corner shop.

When I asked why the receiver needed it, I was told that if they called me in for an annual review (alright, investigation), they reserve the right to contact my customers to verify my tax return. I was a littled puzzled, so they told me that they would ask me how many times I had cleaned windows for customer A, and then they would write to customer A asking how many times that period I had cleaned their windows to verify my accounts.

I said something I shouldn't have in response to that. Over the years I have only ever had 1 customer that wrote down on her calendar when I had been and when I was next due. She's dead now. All the others wouldn't have a clue how many times I had cleaned them during the 2011/2013 tax year if they asked them today for example.

This is of course quite worrying, as a customer might just guess. If they over guess, then don't be surprised if the Receivers takes their word as against my computer records generated by George.

But they'd know if they were a monthly or two monthly custy; and if like me you don't let them get away with cancelling you with a not today they won't guess 12 when you only did 7!

They would have a general idea about your honesty by your accounts and lifestyle.

best thing be honest in all your dealings and then you won't have anything to worry about

The tax man can ask to see a list of all your income and expenses
backdated for the past 6 years so these should be kept.

Granted but surely you do?
At the end of the day your business has a value. and if you sell the business / round/ you have to show / demonstrate value / hand over your customers.
I would have thought recording all sales to each customer is good practice.
Isn't this where the likes of AWORKA comes into its own..

If you declare that you earned £30000 over the year the tax man can ask you to
show how you earned this.
How can you do this without a list of customers and what they paid you.

Except that the OP aked if the tax man required it or if he required just the annual turnover. The taxman does not require a full list of customers, just your t/o and expenses. The taxman can look at your bank account if so minded, but it doesn't mean that you have to send your statements to him when filling out your tax return.  ;)
