In the space of two weeks i have had two rugs which i cleaned slightly differently both had urine spillages on them the first was from a small dog the second from a cat the results were very different and i thought i should warn those with less experience of a mistake that i wont make again.
The first one i treated the visible areas identified by turning the rug over with a urine neutraliser a left the stuff to do it's job, the next day i cleaned it job done looked great no smell.
The second i cleaned first i flooded the small areas of visible contamination with the wand and extracted after it was cleaned i treated those area with the same urine neutraliser, job done i thought cleaned out machine as per normal :-X
Later that evening i popped out when i came back my hallway where i keep my machine reeked like a urinal at a football ground circa 1975 :-X
I spent the next hour or so running the vac hose with bleach, disinfectant, urine neutraliser even though they are plastic hoses i had about five attempts with different chemicals the last thing i tried was lots of water mixed with plenty of detergent, the wand was even more difficult took it out in the garden ran the hose through it that didn't work, that cats pi.. is unbelievable.
Finally after about 90 minutes i got rid off that smell, extracting those areas with plain water first was a BIG MISTAKE I WONT MAKE EVER AGAIN, PHEW :-[

Had the same problem with spilt cream last week, it followed me round alllllllll day!

Cant believe how much Prochem urine neutraliser i have used and the smell of ammonia is still present in the rug, what the hell is it with cat urine, if my odour neutraliser were as concentrated a 5 litre container would last years.
-
I have re-cleaned it now, took it into my garden put the hose on it for an hour or so spraying the backing and letting it soak through then extracted quite surprised and a little disappointed at the amount of dirt that came out, incredibly the smell is still present but only when you place your nose against the backing.
Did think about refusing to clean this type of soiling again, decided to triple my price instead don't suppose people will want to pay but not going to do this again unless it's worth it, just done a little research and found out that cat urine is ten times as concentrated as dog or human, no wonder Prochem urine neutraliser didn't touch it

Hi James
I hate cleaning cat spray...Its the after bit cleaning out machine wand etc.
Had 3 jobs last week one human number 2`s (old lady) and the second job was a dog number 2`s on a week old white carpet & the 3rd a cat spray in a one bed flat.
Found Domestos spray bleach work well last week cleaning machine/hose out.

should try chemspecs urine contamination treatment instead. The prochem stuff is poor imo.

And don't forget a lot of good quality rugs will bleed like hell because of it, so cover yourself. I have had lots of rugs where there is no smell but pee on a corner (can tell by shading) and sneaky custy wasn't going to say.
What you will do next time James is the way to go. Put them in a shallow pit and cover in neat neutraliser for 2-3 hours then put a hose in overnight. Then saturation clean as normal normal the next day. 3x normal price is achievable if you explain whats involved and how you clean the rug all the way through.
-
Thanks Wynne
Probably achievable of the more expensive rugs, i will also try the Chemspec stuff only ever tried Prochem for this.
-
I would recommend Chemspecs urine neutralise too, I beleive impact chemicals do a weaker version on the chemspec stuff (think it is the same product labelled different & cheaper)
-
Yep, chemspec all the way
:)

hiya
I started to do carpet cleaning few months ago - and I always thought that the smell I have while cleaning comes from chemicals or machine itself .
In fact the hose stinks badly - never used do clean any urine or so - just normal carpet - a pretty clean one .
Do you think the hose can absorb the chemicals and thats why it stinks ?
just to confirm - tht the chemicals doesnt smell at all (at least not that bad as the hose) - and after I finish to clean the carpet the room has a normal odor . - but the hose gets me mad ... the van also stinks cos of that.
any ideas why s that ?

Hoses need to be cleaned out from time to time as does your waste tank, you are removing dirt and filth from peoples carpets left in the hose and waste tank bacteria will grow and this is what smells, i put a little bleach in about two litres of water not too much as it may foam up, and i suck this up the hose using only a couple of vacs insted of three this leaves the hoses and machine smelling nice. You don't want to be taking stinking hosed into customers houses.

definitely not : )
thanks for your help

Only util you understand odours and what causes them, will you be able to identify the remedy and which type of chemical / cleaning system will remove the problem.
Untill then enjoy the smell ;D
On a more serious note and if there is some interest i will do a one hour seminar on the tacca day on odour removal. But be warned it is a bit brain pickling ;D however if you lsten to me you will fully understand how odours occur and how you can Sucessfully remove them ;)
Im sure also that another trainer on the day ( John Kelly) is covering fire and flood restoration and will prob cover some aspects of odour removal too.
