Post by: richard jagger on January 28, 2013, 09:59:40 pm
Ek  skryf vanday in my huis taal net om julle te weise hoe klink dit as julle met my praat. Baie keer is dit nie maklik om n andertaalig te wees op a forum soos die, en dan is the culture baie verskuilent as myna. So sien, julle can my verstaan as ek a buitelander is en julle woon nou in my land. Lekker ,lekker  vir julle almal.

Having lived in South Africa, Afrikaans is similar, although according to a Dutch university exchange student we had working with us one year, Dutch has evolved where Afrikaans hasn't. So I understood what you were writing except for "verskuilent as myna".

Where I get lost is in the spoken dialogue as your accent and pronunciation is much different. Communicating on a forum which is not in your home language is a lot more difficult. Even some of us english speakers don't understand what some posters are on about.

I recall being on holiday in the Canaries in the late 1990's and a couple of Dutch families where there with their children. I could talk to the children and understand their chatter among themselves at the poolside, but couldn't understand the parents. I found that quite fascinating.

M M what you are speaking is Dutch. What I am on about is as Spruce would know is Afrikaans.Living in the Orange Free States  from the age of ten change me from a Yorkshire lad to a hairy back  Freestater were 95% of the folk speak Afrikaans. The reason I wrote this is to show how different the culture is in me and that sometimes, I am just misunderstood on this forum because as different as my language is so different my ways and culture. So give me a break at time as I am trying to find my Yorkshire roots.
P. S. Spruce your Dutch friend is patriotic to his  language. It is Afrikaans that evolved from Flemish  (Belguim) which was a part of Holland at some point. It has become a mixture of many languages  (rainbow nation) and is still evolving. That is if it does not die as many see it as the language of apartheid. Its shame as all South Africans paid the price for our mistakes, but that is History and we have all moved on.To me I am home again were I come from. But still not in Ilkley Yorkshire yet.
Thank you for reading
my post.Richard.  :) :) :)

When the Apartheid era was being signed off in Nairobi, Pik Botha and PW Botha attended an NG Kerk service in Nairobi on Sunday morning.

Die Beldt newspaper noted that the Afrikaans spoken in that church was identical to the Afrikaans spoken in SA at the time. The members of that church were descendents of the Voortrekkers that just carried on North when they fled the English expansionism. It also noted that there was another branch/group of the Voortrekkers that moved out of Africa altogether (wisdom beyond their years) and settled in a small community in the Rocky Mountains in the USA.

The Afrikaans they spoke was also the same as spoken in SA when that article was written.

Will Afrikaans disappear?  There are too many staunch Afrikaaners that will try to ensure its survival IMHO.

Hi Spruce.
The Dutch reform or N G churches in S A have always spoken a sort of high dutch dialect.Which to be honest the young Afrikaner has left in the dust. Its not cool to speak this type of Afrikaans. Its currently quite cool to speak Afrikaans with a spattering of English. If you left 20 years back S A is a very different place today. The day that the Afrikaner saw S A as there fatherland is gone. There is definitely a one nation feeling. I have left 9 years ago on the 20th of jan this year. Its only the A N C that are trying to keep there struggle alive, to stay in power. If the black man realized there is not struggle anymore all would be well in S A. The ANC is playing there own apartheid game.
