It's not really that bad but for London/surrey being below 0 is quite rare today I went out to fill tank at a depot but all the transfer pipes were frozen not to mention it was -3 today so called it off did some admin instead but now I'm thinking its gona get back to 5c+ in a few days is it really worth going out knowing you may face problems like tiny frozen Pencil jets water freezing on glass , just annoying things that happen etc etc ,
Is anyone els just gona wait till the Temperature rises?
I'm thinking I might enjoy a long weekend start Monday
I'm behind thou which i dont like as most might be since the holidays and now a day off yesterday and today which was annoying
-
I dont know what the problem is, we had just about our best day today, possible second best but a great days turnover. Seriously.
-
On before u northern lot have a go at me for being soft lol I used to live up north my self and used to go out in -10 the difference is I had no choice as the winters are normally longer and you get weeks where below 0 was the norm down south thou its not so you could just wait for it to pass ;)
I always say the big difference in north and south are in the north the weather is against you in the south the customers are against you so it evens out that way lol
-
Oh I know mate if I really wanted to I would have gone out i only had niggleing problems also if you have staff you are gona be much more motivated then alone ;)
But still I'm sure others might just be laying low for another day or 2 and we reach 4+
No more annoying problems or having to trad shops lol

So what do you do in summer work half a day? Impossible to have really good days in this weather unless you are not bothered about customer satisfaction, sorry !!
-
Just wrap up warm and get on with it, that's what I do, had a really good day today! :)
-
bet it was nowhere near your best groundhog??
-
Thats absolute bollox. Why cant you do a good day in this weather. It wasn't freezing, it wasnt raining, it wasnt snowing and it wasnt windy. So whats making your day so firkin hard? You I would imagine.
We were on the glass by 9.00 and finished on the glass about 4.00 this afternoon.
Cant you do a full day. I know for a fact there were plenty of other guys out there cleaning for a full day today. Perhaps you're a fair-weather window cleaner.

At -7 you cannot clean without a hot water system IMO! The last 2 days we where on the job for 9 and the water froze on the glass straight away.
Point1.
You are slower because its slippery under foot.
point2.
You are slower going from job to job because its slippery under tyre.
point3.
You can only work till 4pm because of day light been lost.
point4.
I do not have a problem with cold weather working after 9 years working on a dock side loading ships in the middle of winter on night shift, believe you me window cleaning is a doddle in the cold.
-

No definately not my best day, but still a good day considering had a few problems with frozen pipes etc in the morning, and I definately work a bit slower when I'm cold.
-
OMG Am i seeing things ;D 2 windowwashers, get off my patch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111
-
That was my point, he must think we are all stuuuuuupid. :P
-
I can't be bothered working in this weather .
I will work 2 days next week instead .
-
IMO some of you are using the cold weather as an excuse for not getting off your bum and working.your either ill prepared, inexperienced, lazy or just plain thick and not prepared in advance! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
others will have worse weather depending which areas of the uk you work and its genuinely impossible to work.
if you use a very high flow rate, start a bit later if really cold and have prepared with a heater in the van overnight its amazing how much work you can clean in 5-6 hours!
but if its as bad as its forecast tomorrow i defo will be having the day off and chilling out for a day or two! ;D ;D ;D
best wishes to you all

Point1. Wasn't minus 7 here
You are slower because its slippery under foot.
point2. Wasn't wet on the ground so not icey.
You are slower going from job to job because its slippery under tyre.
point3. As above
You can only work till 4pm because of day light been lost.
point4. Dont usually work past 4 anyway, so nothing different there.

Ive worked outdoors all my working life, initially in farming, in Denmark (down to minus 30) then landscaping for 11 years and now window cleaning for 14 years. Its not about what youve done in your career, its what you've said. I don't care about what you've done workwise Kent in an earlier life, thats not what we're discussing. I beg to differ about not being able to earn cracking money in this weather. Fact of the matter is we had a cracking day today if you'd prepared better you probably would have been able to do something yourself. it wasn't minus 7 in kent throughout today. Assuming thats where you are by your username.

Mod Note: If Window Washers the 2nd doesn't change his account name and details, this evening, I'll delete his account.
-
Why? Why cant someone have that name apart from Mr Wicks if it isn't taken?
He changed his name. Doing that means that it's open and available to be used by someone else.
There's no foul language, no unacceptable behaviour. It was a joke and you come kicking the door in. Grow up.

No i dont live in kent, I live in a very cold (at the moment) north east, -7 most of the day. Van heater on all night, everything nice and warm, work sheets printed, underpants washed, IT WAS TOO COLD THE WATER WAS FREEZING ON THE WINDOWS. We worked mon and tues in the snow and earned money, not cracking money.
You said you had one of your best days. But i suppose if your best days are not that great then anything is possible. ;D

As someone who has only been WFP since August, up to this morning I have worked in -3. This morn though -4/5, hoselock frozen and jets. What I don't get on here though is some saying yeah I've worked in -7,8,9,10. Surely there's a freezing point roughly give or take 1-2 degrees for all on either a cold or hot system. Or is it just BS..
-
I'm been going like 6 years now had my fair share of Working in some of the worst winters this country's had since 1963 the forecast says Monday it's back to normal still cold 4c+ ofc its winter I'm not complaining about that what I'm saying is I'm working alone have no staff or Subbie so im only responsible for my self I don't need to go out as I have put all the hard work in all year pretty much so I guess I can afford to take tomorrow off and have a long weekend ! Then back to normal temperatures no risk of Vehicle sliding no worry about freezing glass, pipes cutting day short its just 1 more day can anyone see where I am coming from ;)? Surely some one out there is gona keep the kettle warm put there feet up and have a few biccies tomorrow ;??
-
I'll be off tomorrow, no way I'm working in a blizzard. :(

I've done two half days and a full looks like ill get a full day into snow looks like its coming after 3 this afternoon it's about -3 in darlington now just dropping the kids off then I'm starting
-
I'm in the cool gang too. I work in most weathers but if I think it's dangerous for me/others, I call it a day. Some people on here seem to think they are "hard" for working in -35 but really there are just a bit soft in the head. The freezing temps won't last long, the windows will always be there waiting patiently for you.

. True. To many H/S issues for me in this weather.

I cant understand all the fuss about the weather, hot water, heaters etc
Lets be fair customers really wouldnt expect you to clean their windows in snow or freezing weather
I have texted a few and they all said no problem, we didnt expect you to work in this weather.
Regardless of whether you have hot water systems, custys simply dont expect or even want there windows cleaned in the weather.IMHO
-

.... Nor rain, or threat of rain or wind or too hot and so on. The fact is that if you get a week behind you either lose that work forever or at some point you have to clean after 3 instead of 4 weeks so that you don't lose it. Tha'ts if you are 4 weekly.
Now I wouldn't clean in snow as in all probability it will only be a day lost and I would rather go sledging with my son, but freezing weather can last weeks and if I can work I will and that is that. Take it or leave it - that is my service.

It depends on how you run your business. Mine is structured in a way to allow for weeks such as this. I tell my customers to expect 10 cleans per year. My monthly turnover aims to be 10% of my yearly turnover. That gives me 2 months to catch up or have time off. To be honest if you can put in a few good weeks when the weather is good, 8:30-4:30 5 days running you can afford the bad weeks like this and the next.
However if you go out and only earn what you need, a week like this can stuff you really up. We all knew it was coming. It does every year in one form or another.
-
Good way of doing it sunshine.
I've just put out a few standing order letters out to late/forgetful payers to setup standing order and also said 10 cleans.
Example £10 job = 100 a year divided by 12 months, so £8.33 (rounded up £8.35)
Just stated in letter 5 week cycle.
Tried getting round monthly rarely happens :-[
Sorry Sunshine to bore yourself with above I like the way you aim for 10% of yearly sum in a month.
I need to be a better business man this year.
I'm trying not to dump custies if i can; if they pay slow then it's standing order option first, then dump.
I have a bit too much work so i'd rather lose the 2-5% slow payers and get around the prompt payers quicker ;)

If you have too much work you can always insist they go SO or drop and if you loose a few it wont matter.
I'm no great businessman I just git fed up of living hand to mouth.
