Title: were do you get your staff from??
Post by: ronnie paton on January 02, 2013, 06:11:09 pm
iv tried all sorts from training people i know to the job centre and failed miserably.

Iv been tough iv been soft and it seems that because we employ fom the lower end of the employment ladder its near impossible to get good honest hard working people.

recent issue with employee was here two weeks invited on works doo often paid for dinners has was cleary struggling financially, paid for all drinks and food costing company £180 for him and mrs.

gave him easy time first two weeks taining to use the reach and wash properly then he doesnt turn up after works doo mon and tue get hold off him and he had a domestic after the work doo.

i give him a chance

agrees to make days up sat and mon(christmas eve) let him do half day friday (was paying him a full day and this was after he didnt turn up) he works saturday 6 hours does really well seems like he workrd s lot quicker on is own when im not there to carry him ::)

turns up monday all thoough a full hour late then at dinner time he calls telling me he is going home has needs to get christmas presents :o doesnt complete work and asks for wages that he would of been getting after work was done.

gives me a sob story about is domestic and is mrs saying he needs to get his own presents now so i allow him pay him and he promises to come back thursday and complete site started monday

get a text boxing day can i work sat got kids overnight so i say start at 10 then but it must be done thursday has its already un proffesional to clean half a site monday/thurs but he texts why are you making life difficult for me ::) ::)

any way to cut the long story shorter turnes phone off and he doesnt get back to me so i do the work myself

now this is one person but iv had so many like this

so please tell me were you get your staff from how you have made it work

pleeeaasssseeee

Ronnie

I have been using Adecco - the recruitment firm. Started back in September and I have two really good lads now.

They sent me people - if I didn't get on with them or they weren't right I phoned the office and they replaced them. More difficult for me as they need to have CSCS cards but they have come up trumps.

May work for you!!

it is difficult to get good staff in this game, when my dad ran it he had about half a dozen through before getting a decent one and it was often the same whenever he was employing, just numbers and perserverance, it can get you thinking its you - but it isnt, as regards getting new staff try asking customers who may know someone or people you know, can be difficult with family though, job centre worked for us but we did get a lot of people not suitable through them,

I wouldn't go near a job centre. A newspaper ad would be better as it shows a little more willingness to work than those attending job centres.

A young lad and his girlfriend walked past me when I was working a few months ago. Ten minutes later he came back on his own and said "have you got any work going? I'm so desperate i would even do pooe like this" Not quite the attitude one looks for in an employee  :D

Ronnie

As Steve has said. My thinking on using Adecco was that if the people had made the effort to go and register with a recruitment firm they would have a little bit more about them.

You may get more luck with a local recruitment firm but Adecco are one of the biggest and most reputable.

The business has been really busy running up to Christmas and we have an early start to the New year with works commencing on Sunday.

take on as many parttimers as fills the workload then once you sense a bad egg you can let  them go easily without it rocking the boat.

i find my workers thru word of mouth -first thing i say is "ive been feeling ill lately, whatabout you? "

next i ask whats your doctors name  ,if they know it and the surgery open hours very well, they arent going to fit in

Happy New year to you as well Ian.

I only have the two but at the end of the year we were subbing to six others.

Going to be stepping back a little this year and will be using Adecco to find me another two. They are self employed so when the business is quiet I don't have to pay.

We have just picked up a direct contract with Tesco so I am expecting a massive increase in the workload and am preparing now for it.

Good to speak to both yourself and Ronnie. How is business for you both?

Rob ;D

Hi Ron

Still waiting to here back from contract.

With staff, most of mine have come from them asking me direct

you just have to keep trying, you need about 5 bad ones to find one good one.

We have been through loads of staff, but managed to retain the best ones.

One town i would never recruit from ever again is Penzance.

One didn't turn up because he popped a blister on his toe, and was never seen again after that

Another 2 from there just took the pee, i thought all 3 were going to be good workers, but all let me down in the end

Dave I don't think the 'area' were based is great but also most of the surroundings areas also, I don't mean disrespect has I've been brought up here but people have the wrong attitude no work effic and respect

I've tried starting some one with out experience but it takes so long to get them right and up to speed.

I often get told by people that I'm so fussy with my standards and most can't handle it, but that it something I won't change that for them

Dave thanks for that feed back, maybe I could send you an email about your 'training schedule' for new people, rob ill look into the agency's and see the cost.

I find mine through customers. My latest was a customers son, was a labourer and told me hasnt been working for 6 months. Been with me 7 months now and he also canvasses with me which is a plus. Im sure you must have many customers who would be greatful of a job.

Mick most of my work is commercial but again it's that training period, I generally do less work with some who needs training than I can on my own for quite a while

Fair play if your mainly commercial. Id like to be in your shoes 1 day without the grief of domestics.

Hey Ronnie,

I recon we need to get rid of people at the first sign they are not right.  the first 4 weeks are still the job interview.  if there's anything they do that you dont like, jump on it and dump them.  they are on best behaviour those first weeks, so if you're in doubt already...  you need to get rid.

I normal use Gum tree for my employees. As we know wfp is more popular now and there are many more that have used it! so I only take on new staff that have used wfp! this then saves time and money on wasters trying to get them up to speed!! also when I employ staff I have a professional attitude and get across its not casual job, bottom line in all this....your in business and have to make a profit  ;)
