Price goes up if they tell me they've used an RD or Vax etc. This allow for the extra time taken to rinse all that residue out of the carpet. And before someone tells me I'm ripping the customer off, I inform the customer exactly why I put the price up. They either take it or leave it.

So what do you do if they have used an RD and haven't told you, charge them extra every time you find a supposed residue?  ???
You could take it even further and start slapping extra charges on for traffic lanes or dirty patches, or you could just do your job and clean the bloody thing.

Wynne,
You're light - it's a great idea. We could interview each customer to see they have ever used an RD on their carpet, if they have slap an RD tax on the job and if they haven't slap a surcharge on it for denying you the extra income you would have got had they used an RD. ;D Simples ;D

How do they get the idea that Yorkshire folk are 'thrifty' although they do say it was a Yorkshireman that invented Ramadan just to save on the food bill.

I have heard it but it depends who's telling the story it is hotly disputed no pun intended but its one of those Yorkshire Lancashire debates.

I think Lancashire is full of puddings anyway :-*

Hope you and Karen have a good Xmas.

Sorry, I don't get involved (anymore) in pricing debates. I have my charges, you have yours. Not interested in what others decide as their business charges any more than I'm interested in what others think of my charges. The customer will decide if the charge is acceptable.

Re: RD residues. Proberbly like many before me, I've had customers tell me that having used a RD they find they're having to "clean" their carpet more and more often. There's only one reason for that, and it's nothing to do with "supposed residue".  Re: my "Bloody Job". I decide what my job is and if I want the job at all. Why, when I can fill my time cleaning clean carpets, should I sell my time on the cheap to someone who's made my "Bloody Job" more difficult than it needs to be?

Time was when I'd accept anything, several years down the line I can be a bit more piccy.  Anyway, you don't find too many carpets "cleaned" with a RD in a high end property. Enjoy ::)

Try reading what I posted again. I posted "if they tell me", simple enough I would've thought. Does a job occasionally throw something unexpected at me? Yes of course they do. Can I foresee every problem lurking in a carpet? No, can you?

Once I've given a quote thats it, I don't play cowboys and indians with people. If I've not done my job properly and enquired "have you cleaned the carpet before?" (nice simple question which is normally answered honestly) then I've no one to blame but myself.

So you've agreed a price and then you ask them if they have had the carpet cleaned before, if they say yes, with an rd or vax, you then tell them the price has gone up. Or if you didn't ask them over the phone but agreed a price which got you the job, you then ask the question and if rd you put the price up on the doorstep. But then in this post you say 'once you've given a quote, that's it'
You've lost me ??? ???

God all mighty. This is like pulling teeth. And you run a business??

1) I don't quote over the phone. I like to see what I'm being asked to clean.
2) Quoting in person (rather than over the phone) helps build a relationship with the customer.
3) I ask my questions first.........THEN GIVE THEM THE QUOTE.
4) If the job takes longer than I anticipate (taking all answers into consideration) then thats my problem. Some you win...............ARE YOU WITH ME NOW SIMON? Or would you prefer pictures?
