ive know big fat john out side of window cleaning for about 10 years and i can say that the bloke is as staight as they come.i 1st got to know him todo with boys local football club, where we help one and other though running are own boys teams.

i can say that his company just keeps growing and he took the chance with the nationals and jump on the boat which you lot missed, probarly why a few are ped off with losing your shops.if it wasnt him then it would have been someone else,he took the gamble and it paid off.
when i see his boys out and about on my patch they still say hello and will chat about there fat boss, also if i have any problems and i need advice i know that hes always on the end of the phone.

and i say again fat john doesnt give me anywork,so i have no ties to him.  :P :P

It's subby contract work and most that I have seen is far from good workmanship it is worked around because of price. I know this, anyone doing it on any scale if honest knows it too
thing is I have nothing against this type of work and would take it on and do it to my standard,  the town where I live has very few national chains apart from charity shops ( which I get called to clean directly sometimes ) if approved has work in st. Neots, and surrounding areas to 20 miles I would like to speak to him or anyone I just can't take on one greggs only. i can see clearly the bigger picture. But it has to be right

I'm sure most see the bigger picture, but like you it would cost me more to park/stop the van to earn from just one Greggs. I don't think I would get a good hourly rate from  5 or 6 local Greggs if I got them, with travelling time.
But then Dean seems to make a good living travelling the country doing national work.
I think its just horses for courses.

That's the thing. If you have a few it may be worth it. Myself, I prefer to charge a good price for domestics and do them when I please. It may be worth it for some though to clean a department store for £7 in the dark.

No one would take on a Greggs with nothing else near it, the same as you wouldnt drive to a street to clean a terraced front.

But if you were already on the High St you would take it.

Would you? I don't do shops, but if I had a row of teraaces priced properly and someone came out of one I didn't have and offered me theirs at a fiver I would politely decline. Why would I want to drive down prices?

Touchy. We all make different decisions David. I can understand that you are driven to keeping your vans and people fully utilised as you are paying for them anyway, but the decisions for a sole trader working domestics will be different.

I would in fact i do and its easy work pull out up side do one bay window and the door then off i go for 5 mins work i get £5.

Im going to start on commercial next year the problem with commercial work is you have to start some where taking on one one shop at a time till you have a few shops all together.

I haven't decided if im going to go down the normal highstreet commercial route, try to get into bluewater or both

Greggs have their insides done; it's often a pain with signage and stuff in the way; you have to get their early before they load up the windows with pasties for the fat masses.

They were done twice a week also.

We do domestics and commercial.

So I think I am qualified to comment, funny how people assume I clean retail to keep my guys busy

I do it for profit if it doesn't add up we don't do it. It's all windows

In one town we have about 50 shops of varying prices, all clean by lunchtime, just one guy, cheapest job is a chain spoke about here

Gav

I know what the job is I think I found someone for him

It isnt 5 mins work for £5 though. If you was asked to do a shop in dartford for £5 it would take you 20 mins to get there add that to setting up time, doing the job and packing away and the time it takes to get to your next job could lead upto 40mins to an hour all for £5.?
No thanks.

I'm sure i could learn loads from you and others on here but we all have to start some where mate the amount of times i have lost out on commercial because i don't go near the high street enough if your already their working you've got a better chance of getting the job.

Plus on the residential side most of my work was one house on its own now i have loads more on the same streets

I dont touch retail. Much more money in doing an office block for £200 sheets etc.
I gave up on shops ages ago as couldnt get enough to warrant it vs houses or larger commercial jobs.

yep i agree with mick here.nice domestics and medium office blocks, blocks of housing association flats etc rather than shops.you can charge a good price and earn well out of them.cant see me earning £60 an hour on shops!!!

plus shops normally have to be cleaned at ridiculously early times in the morning!!i certainly dont wanna get up at 5am in the morning to go and clean a few shops.

regards

No one would take on a Greggs with nothing else near it, the same as you wouldnt drive to a street to clean a terraced front.

But if you were already on the High St you would take it.

Even if i had work either side i wouldnt. I work for myself, not to make others more money.
Just my opinion, some will some wont. I wont.

Paul

It isnt 5 mins work for £5 though. If you was asked to do a shop in dartford for £5 it would take you 20 mins to get there add that to setting up time, doing the job and packing away and the time it takes to get to your next job could lead upto 40mins to an hour all for £5.?
No thanks.
It is if you are there anyway. That's the point people are making. My view is that if you started doing houses for cheap just because you are there, pretty soon prices would fall. It seems odd that this either doesn't apply to shops or people think it doesn't apply.

It's not my cup of tea granted but it's up to every individual how you make your money.

It would seem you need to be right in there with plenty of shops etc close together to make it pay & the bonus of all weather cleaning (if you're that way enclined).

Personally, I wouldn't want a large percentage of my income reliant on someone else's contracts. I can only comment on work I have been offered & compared to what I get for domestic & private commercial it was literally peanuts! However, if there was enough of it in close proximity to each other then it would pay BUT.... it wouldn't come as easy as my current work.

You have to weigh up the effort & commitment required for the return offered, for me it has never even come close to tempting me but for others it obviously does.

I do think though, that there is a misconception at times that commercial work is good no matter what & I strongly disagree with that.

a big part of shop work is the area you live in,bristol city center must have over a 1000 shops whitin a 5miles radius, add that lot up plus the windows of offices above the shops and you have a nice days work,3days later your cleaning the same shops.

i do a friday/thursday morning doing shops, yes your right not a great pay i could earn the same doing houses, but i like the different workand i dont start before 7am doing them and cause its a friday i finsh at 2/3pm,but these shops get done no matter what the weather and all pay on the day.

There's a lot to be said for all weather income that pays on the day, I'd do more shops if I could get them!

The only small commercials i like doing are the pubs coz most of the time i get a free pint and since the smoking ban insides are a doddle to clean. All of my pubs i do are 2-4 weekly and get £40-100 a pop. No early starts on these either. I used to do all the local coral bookmakers near me at £20 a pop before they went national which also wasnt early starts between 8.30 till 12 to get 8 done shops done.
The only early starts i do are if its an office block or doing industrial cladding cleaning on a price. Wouldnt get out before 6 to do anything other than well priced work. Not that desperate.
