Title: External Hose Lagging?
Post by: concept on December 07, 2012, 10:10:33 am
I use an external tap, running hose to my garage, and during the winter, I frequently have to defrost the hose in order to run system.

Does anyone have any recommendations for lagging? Or an insulated hose?

I looked at the grey foam type stuff, but figured that would get wet and freeze anyway, so defeating the object.

Need to cover around 10m.

just an idea, how about some lay flat delivery pipe, blue stuff 1 inch machine mart sell.

use that as outer sleeve, put grey foam lagging inside (if it fits)

push half inch garden hose through foam and blue hose.

Or use pipe as outer sleeve won't really bend though.

my ro setup is at my parents and that's a pain.

Always thought if i had garden with own setup, i would bury plastic pipe under lawn and thread garden hose through.

if its only 10m use quick release fittings and drain when not in use!  :o

Over the last 3 very cold winters when running my system it never froze its only when left out not in use it freezes.

I'm looking to fully automate the system, so I can leave it and not have to manually turn on and off, as I am too busy.

i have had similar problems with pipes bursting due to freezing, the only way i cured it was to fit a drain off and drain pipes after finishing producing water.

Yeah, thought of that but doesn't help my quest for automation!

If your water  supply is not to far from you RO use a thin down pipe and run you hose through and try making it water proof when the hose  freezes just pour luke warm water down the gutter pipe if its at an angle it will drain out What I use is  very thick lagging and paint the lagging with latex coating even duck tape rapped around your lagging will work.I my van I used lagging with a silicone sealer layer around to seal the bulkhead to the cab.|I spread the lagging with sealer then allowed to dry before use. Seal the joints with duck tape.

Pipe wrap then lay flat hose over that will keep pipe wrap from getting wet . Mike

Best idea yet! Got some spare so will do that wee project over the weekend.

You only need to bury the water pipe ( blue plastic ) about 18" - 24" in the ground to stop it freezing just get some thick pipe lagging for the ends where it goes in and comes out the ground
Did mine over summer after moving as its a bit easier to dig
