Following on from my other post:
What would you guys being window cleaners/business owners like to Learn about Social Media to help move you forward with it in 2013:
"I really dont want this to turn into I hate social media, it doesnt work type post".
So for the ones that are interested in this topic
What would you like to Learn about it?
I know now from the poll and comments that many do not understand it still and I would like to help you understand it better
I was a little shocked by the poll which is here>> http://www.cleanitup.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=161898.0 (http://www.cleanitup.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=161898.0)
You can by the way still add to it before i lock the voting down.
The three social media's I am going to be covering are facebook, twitter and youtube as these are the most common.
So pop in your questions on what you would like to know or whats holding you back and I will try to answer them within the article for you if it gets to big I will put it into a guide free of charge for all the basic things to get you up and running.
Many thanks
Ian

hey ian!
that's really kind of you to offer this help.

thanks

I'd like to know if an affiliate program run through a facebook business page can be used as an effective marketing tool for a window cleaner,...
-
I'd like to know why Ian's faffing about with this poll. Just get on and write the darned piece man.
There's plenty out there already.

Hi Ian, I replied to your original post. I'm not a fan of facebook, for window cleaner marketing (at this time) however, if you have some valid points to make that would help my business, I am very willing to listen and learn. Look forward to what you have to say.
-
Do you recommend a stand alone fb account or a window cleaning 'page' linked to your personal account?
-
Excellent stuff keep them coming guys.
-
Is it worth paying for fb ads? Or better to target local groups yourself for free?
-
Do people realise that they have a kind of hidden message box called 'other' where messages from people not on their friend list get sent?
Almost missed a few new referrals until someone showed me this.
-
Do people realise that they can send proper documents via a personal message?
Quick and efficient.
-
Keep them coming :)
What do you want to know, ask away I will probably put it into a video for you and a PDF
-
can you show me a window cleaner where social media has really worked for them ?
-

I'd like to begin with the basics please - where to start, which one is best, and how to get the best coverage for my area if possible - I.e how to maximise it for best returns
-
Great going guys, anyone else reading this want to add to this post

Can I ask a question? Why do window cleaners not use social media? It's a must for any small business, it can be ran from your phone and its always working once you have started to build your network. It's free apart from your investment of time, and most importantly IT WORKS!
-
can you show me a window cleaner where social media has really worked for them ?
I can't show you a window cleaner but I know literally dozens of social media success stories for all kinds of small businesses including cleaning companies if you are genuinely interested...
-
so the answer is no then
-
can you show me a window cleaner where social media has really worked for them ?
Not yet is the answer for that Dave on facebook anyway.
but hopefully will chnage that ;)

From my experience you only get out of social media what you put into it.
Our page was sitting there doing nothing just gathering the odd like every couple of weeks.
Once I started putting a bit of time, effort and a tiny bit of money into it, it started to generate more and more likes.
Over the past 4 months we've had a fair few people come through the Facebook.
Considering it has cost us a MAX of £30, I'd call it a success.

Hi Ian, i'm very interested to learn how social media such as FB could benefit my business,
as i am a new WFP start up, any means that could generate work i would be interested.
Regards lal
-
I may start 1 up on fb and state that for every confirmed regular customer i pay £5 to the person who got me the deal, could get untolds of good work from it with everyone going out canvassing to earn easy money.
Imagine 500+ people recomending you to there friends and family, knocking on doors so they get there commision. School mums will pass info on to other mums etc.
I can see a big campaign if worded right working as at the end of the day money talks.
-
So long as you set the T & C'c for the offer correctly Mick, sounds good. I may try that myself. I charge 50% more for first cleans in that situation, to cover any one offs.
Haven't used my WC page much in the last 18 months, but that sounds good.

What is the most effective way to get real "likes" on a facebook page from people who are genuine potential customers - not friends/family/forum buddies etc?
I'm currently working on building up this facebook page, so specific tips would be appreciated! http://www.facebook.com/AvondhuInternet

Hi Nat, very good question,
but if at all possible could you remove the link from your post on here, this is another thing that I will be covering.
can speak with you about that at another time by skype or something.
cheers

im not fudging the question or not intentionally , i asked what would you like to learn, maybe I read it wrong. :-\

Why ask Nat to remove his link?
Interesting link I thought. Keep it there Nat.
Especially as my website is on there ;)
What actually qualifies you as a social media expert by the way Ian? Have you got an NVQ?

did I say I was a social media expert or did you dave ?
I will let Nat decide if he understands what I mean. I am not dragging this post down so if you have a question about social media please ask it and will see if I can cover it.
Directing questions at me are not what this post is about.
-
Hi Dave,
I am interested to know why you think window cleaning is different to any other business on social media? You only seem interested in window cleaning, do you not think what works in other industries is relevant?

Ian, don't tell me when I can and can't post you berk.
I asked why you think your information would be regarded as the best. Seeing you have no qualifications to write a guide in the first place. How do we know it's for real?
You've set yourself out to be an expert on this - you might not have a clue what you're talking about.
-
Hi Dave,
You only seem interested in window cleaning,
Wonder why? ::)
-
Are you and ian going into partnership gd??
I know nothing about social media but you 2 seem well into it at the mo.
What can you do to generate more work from them?.
-
I would hazard a guess we are being set up as the guinea pigs for Ians forthcoming ebook?

Fair point there really (without the berk tho)
-
My new business gets all its work from social media and has not cost me a penny in advertising, I see it as similar to leafleting... The more you put out there and network, the more work it will bring...
Ian has helped me massively with advice on all forms of internet marketing and he knows what he is talking about so it wouldn't do people harm to listen...

i didn't tell you when or where you can post, please read it again mate, I said if you have a question about social media I would try and answer it. I'm not forcing you or anyone to read it. You having a bad day :-*
P.s sorry if it came across as me telling where to post was not at all meant to I just don't want this getting into a pointless post that's all
-
No I'm having a good day. So what qualifications do you have in Social Media? Have you been to uni and studied I.T.?
-
Do you need qualifications to be a window cleaner Dave?
If you don't like what Ian is trying to do just don't read it, seems you never answer me though as I could have answered a couple of your questions...

Apparently yes. We're all doing it wrong. ;D

Whats your new business your using social media then?? Whats the web address.
Im interested to see what you are doing tech wise.
I bet it is something like fixing smashed phones or something.
Mick you got it in one, its a massive market and only going to grow...
Why do I get the feeling all you are going to do is slag it off?
-
Get off,the pair of you, thats Ian and GD or come on here and explain what it is going to do and why and how to do it.
Get pragmatic, talk pragmatically or stop wasting everyone`s time.
GD`s got a whole new business from social media,i`d like to see the accounts. You lads are putting in 90 hrs a week talking and not earning.Well when you have the proper answers come back with them and stop idealising.
-

Too true lol on a serious note though its a valid point, social media advisors are generally people who love marketing and don't have relevant qualifications, that doesn't mean they don't know what they are doing...

Its hardly a breakthrough business fixing mobile phone screens though is it.
You are making out you are some sort of guru.
My mate has a stall on dagenham market where as well as selling phone and computer accesories he also fixes them too. He gets so much repair work through being on the stall and people seeing him there each week and gets recomendations through good work.
I cant see how twitter or facebook would come anywhere near to haveing your own stall or shop just like i cant see social media being anywhere near as good as old fashioned leaflets, canvassing or word of mouth. Im no expert though as never tried advertising on social media but from what i have seen on yours it isnt that great.
-
No I'm having a good day. So what qualifications do you have in Social Media? Have you been to uni and studied I.T.?
cool, i have no formal qualifications, i don't believe there is one in social media (could be wrong) but it changes so fast i can't see how one would be relevant anyway I have on the other hand spent a long time looking right into this and I am placed closely with people that do this as a business daily around the world in a very big way, so I guess I'm well placed from where I am sat. Maybe not in yours but I'm not pushing this on you or anyone.

No way will i slag it off. I admire ambitious people.
I didnt agree with Your views with your canvassing but wouldnt slag something i know nothing about off. My mate has so much money from fixing smashed screens, he has tought me a lot with fixing blackberry track pads and speaker installing etc. i find it facinating how much money there is in fixing broken phones and also how easy it is as my mate learnt it all from youtube tutorials.

Ian, what is the point of attracting a whole new bunch of questions when there doesn`t seem to be a provision for you providing instant clear cut answers?
-
I would imagine (i dont kniw the bloke so dont know for sure) that the post is a bit like market research...?
The aim is to get the questions and answer in this 'info pack' your making ian??
Hence the 'lack of answers' to questions.
Just a thought as everyones seems to ne kicking off again...

Jesus!,how difficult is it to know what a window cleaners wants from advertising?
This market research is about putting together a package of most likely groundless promises that can be charged for.

Do not worry, we will have another ' look at me ' post with ' guru ' explaining all, it might be free so people will say ' What a guy, what a hero ' , if you have to pay for it they will say ' what a guy, what a hero, he does need to earn '

nameless the market research is finding out what people want to know about this subject i know what i want from advertising but we are all different. im doing it so I don't waste my time making something of no interest to the reader. Why the hostility ?
James, clearly I will not be able to win either way with you, surprised you didn't come on sooner if I'm honest, really don't know what your problem is with me.

Ian, what about 'pinned posts' in groups? They are handy.

I Stayed of the post despite watching where the post was heading, right from the word ' go ' it was easy to see
I have no problem with you, though you do like to ' put your head up and out of the trench '
for example
http://www.cleanitup.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=162114.20
It is very easy to see what rhino does, most on here can see he just wants people to look at him , YOU either can not see it ( i doubt it ) or you thought you would get in on the act and defend him which will of course give you attention ?

i defended him purely because I hate to see negativity i cannot understand why people don't like to see others well, i looked at his post but didn't see pictures on links and people knocking him.
The point of this post in an ideal world would be for people to give me questions that they wanted to know about social media for window cleaning so to make it easier for me to compile it. I knew that was never going to be as easy as that. This is not a look at me post or I would have got people to a look at a website which I haven't.
I'm doing an article about this of course will have my name on it.
-
I`m probably hostile because i want you to come on here and "give" and i have the impression, perhaps wrongly, that you are manouvering to "take".
If i`m missing a trick then how about a few paragraphs detailing an expected successful strategy to adopt,i`d like the address of every twittering lunatic with dirty windows within 15 miles of my own postcode and their current salary, relationship status and any peculiar vices they may have enabling me to pre-select the one`s i may wish to manipulate.
-
It would be good if the nice Mr Drudge and James Leet could "give" something to this post instead of ripping Ian apart
Lets just see where this is going before we pass judgement, as Ian says, he is nearly there with the votes.

How was i negative about your online business???
Your 1 of those blokes who you have to agree to disagree with.
All i did was checked out what you was bigging yourself up about using social media and to be honest i didnt find it that good or interesting at all. Anyone can setup a facebook or twitter account to advertise what they do however 99% of people use social media to socialise with. If joe bloggs wants a window cleaner he would go on yell.com over facebook or twitter any day of the week all they can do on twitter is follow and watch you being desperate for work offering all sorts of promotions like 50% off first clean etc where as i charge an extra 50% on first cleans. I have had roughly 20 customers from facebook from friends knowing what i do over 5 years. Around 50 from yell.com but the larger 1000+ customers have all came from canvassing and word of mouth using no advertising, leaflets or websites just plain old chasing the work myself which i am verey proud of achieving.
Social media doesnt even come close.

Around 50 from yell.com but the larger 1000+ customers have all came from canvassing and word of mouth using no advertising, leaflets or websites just plain old chasing the work myself which i am verey proud of achieving.
Social media doesnt even come close.
Social media is about networking, for most businesses it will never take over from other forms of promotion.
But and its a big but done properly it will HELP expand your business through brand awareness.
For The Tech Repair Centre it was an experiment to see how far you could go with social media, facebook is the main page but most of the work comes from my personal page through networking through the groups and just running a plain and simple ad. I get messages from friends of friends of friends because I am now known to a lot of people as the guy that fixes iPhones, ipads etc.
The experiment was purely a personal one to see if I could go from a standing start and turn it into a viable business. The next step is to take it into a major brand on Nottingham and the surrounding areas high streets... Then who knows how far it can go but all I know from the last few months is the market is there and people want them fixed....

You see Mick I try to write a nice considered answer for you and you just have another dig....
Can I ask why you have such an interest rise n shine?
I am actually involved in talks with two people at the moment about window cleaning projects if I really have to justify why I am here lol

GD
please leave the personal insults and swearing.
calling someone a P***K will not be tolerated
Sorry Dave I just get so riled by the negative people on here, not been on for a while and it's just the same old people having a dig at anyone and anything, they seem to think its sport and its big and clever....
Won't happen again....
How was i negative about your online business???
Your 1 of those blokes who you have to agree to disagree with.
All i did was checked out what you was bigging yourself up about using social media and to be honest i didnt find it that good or interesting at all. Anyone can setup a facebook or twitter account to advertise what they do however 99% of people use social media to socialise with. well done mate, good luck for your future :)

Yea sure, I find it odd you should wish to frequent a window cleaning for two years and not be a window cleaner.
Are you the same fella that used to come on here that alled himself Davo or Dave who wasn't a window cleaner either? There can't be that many.

I know you wont as your stubborn but take my advice and do as my mate does and get a proper market stall, you dont need a shop yet . My mate does 2 markets a week and the days he doesnt do the markets he is repairing non stop phone after phone after phone from customers who went to he's stall. He has so much money round him and has a great reputation. No website, advertising just a market stall and being good at what he does. He uses youtube if he ever gets stuck doing a repair and buys all hes spares from ebay and broken phones from gumtree. So much profit involved if you go about it the right way.
-
Thanks Ben...
Rise n shine...
I find it even odder that you would even worry about why I come on here...
I ran a canvassing company then I became a window cleaner myself then decided it wasn't for me then went back to canvassing, all the time being involved in other business helping them with business development...
Since I stopped canvassing a while ago I have not been on but recently a couple of opportunities have come my way so here I am....
Do I have your permission to stay now?? Pretty please....
-
Mick why on earth would I listen to your advice?
Where did I say I was getting a shop? I said I was taking it to the high street, there are other ways but I will leave you guessing on that one, lollipop for the winner...
No disrespect to your friend but I have much bigger plans than a market stall two days a week, and before you start I am not saying there is anything wrong with that just its not in my short or long term plans...
Mick stick to giving your valued advice to people who may want or need it but I am just fine thanks fella...

I thought my curiosity was simply that; down boy with the sarcasm! ;-) as its a forum, if you're not in the biz you're going to have to expect to be asked. I guess you are Davo, he always responded with a knee jerk reaction just like that. Sorry if my curiosity offended you, but that's something you'll have to get over.
Don't they have telephone repair forums?
-
Check this out!!
Davo's Christmas has come early.

Who is Dave or Davo? It's certainly not me...
I have been and will be involved in the business again and came on last night for the first time in months, was interested in Ians posts so came back..
Didn't realise it was written in blood that I had to have cleaned windows today to be allowed on your forum...
-
God another wise cracking Muppet...
-
It isn't, but if you're business is phone repairs you're in the wrong place.
-
Now now Davo, you've already been told once about insulting people on here.
-
You only read what you want to hear, have you got nothing better to do with your life than troll about a window cleaning forum?
-
Yes. But as you're on here I figured I might as well annoy you instead.
-
The really funny part is you actually think you are being clever, you quote Twain and then ignore your own advice....
-

Lol your a sad small time twit that uses twitter, a market stall is 100 times better than how you do it now. The point i was making is my mate only needs to do 2 days on the stall main reason being to collect the broken phones and to give them back and the selling of items is the bread and butter he takes more than me a month.
i told you that you wouldnt last at canvassing. You even said you canvassed for window cleaners but didnt work out so started to clean yourself couldnt hack it so went back to canvassing and failed at that so now fixing broken phone screens. Not being funny but how dare you mock me when your a loser to yourself buddy. How many different businesses do you want to attempt. By the looks at it social media far from works for you.

Oh I have got him lol not fun is it?
For the record I have worked freelance in business development for the last ten years, which means I have worked for dozens of companies over the years...
ask anybody that actually knows me and whose opinion I actually value and you will find out I am very capable and certainly not a loser...
Sweet dreams

lol sacked from dozens of companies more like for chatting utter poope. You talk a good days work or should i say tweet a good days work!!!
Give me there contact details then coz i dont believe you. If your that good at business you wouldnt be here now aiming at window cleaners would you Or trying to fix your facebook friends phones to earn you a pound note.
-
You are hilarious....
Why would I even bother you that much?
Sweet dreams

This is making ian wicks look bad. Maybe he is onto something but with gd popping up with hes failed attempts and not being able to prove how social media is a great tool for business doesnt look good for anyone else to make a stand.
Look at the more succesful parties on this forum
Dave morris
Clear magic
Souter
Lee pryor
Richard speech
Easy clean
Jv price
To name a few.
They dont sit at home all day poxy tweeting on twitter and offering 50% off first clean. They all buy work or get decent canvassers to build there work,, not 2 bob outfits like you who doesnt canvass coz of a bit of rain or who has to do new estates coz cant manage with all the negatives at the doors.
I dont like mocking people but you seem a wierd breed coming on here when your not even in the game anymore???

It's just for you Mick, I spoke to Ian today and he mentioned you had been having a go at me so I explained my thoughts about you. The truth is you actually think you are winding me up but the reverse is actually true, do you honestly think I give a damn what you think of me? It's pathetic to watch how you dive in on subjects you know nothing about. You actually come up with some good points now and sgain but they are lost in a sea of spewing bile...
I know you looked it up on Twitter before you took your wild guess at what I do for a living, I am not stupid so don't ever assume so...
If you actually took time to read what people post and reply to what is actually said I am sure there is a decent conversation in there somewhere but you chose to be a negative human being who likes to pick away at people.
Now get a life you sad little keyboard warrior....
-
At the risk of getting killed in the cross fire and having not read all of the posts ... whats the issue ?
facebook and twitter all very straight foward so easy to learn yourself .. if you think it will help in your business .. it aint rocket science.
-
The issue is Ian that Mick has a problem with me as I won't take his advice or even give it consideration so he thinks it is ok to keep having a dig at me, he thinks its sport lol
What he hasn't realised is I am the one that has been playing him, its not window cleaning related but I am working in a new business that I want to take to every high street in the East Midlands and his advice to me was to get a market stall... He just does not listen and thinks he knows best...

Just for the record, Ian wasn't talking badly about anyone. He just mentioned the night before and it was me that was talking badly about people....

Oh sweet dreams GD
His 1000th post was to wish me sweet dreams, how touching lol
-
Wrong again lol Ian and I are not working together nor will we be for the foreseeable future as we are both busy with other projects....
And really? You ignore the massive post and pick on the bit where I mention Ian? Does the other post not suit you so you just going to have another personal dig at me? Or been off searching for hidden treasure?
