It has recently been pointed out to me that vat is not payable on flyers/leaflets. I have looked this up on the inland revenue site and it is correct with the exception of 3 types. These are:
A leaflet offering free admission to premises (obviously don't apply to us)
A leaflet that offers a discount i.e 10% off
A leaflet with a space on it for writing on.
Once again thank's for bringing this to my attention. Has anybody been charged vat by an unscrupulous printer?

It was a pleasure Dave happy to point it out and hopefully save some of us some money.

I concurr with john
Leaflets are V.A.T Excempt
Any printer charging Vat on leaflets
and keeping the 17.5% is actually breaking the
law

I take it you are a print business. I am looking for the best price for 5000 to 10000 A5 full colour double sided 130g paper or better quality. Any ideas?
Does anybody print their own on a laser printer colour? The printers are cheap enough, but it's the toners after with there being 4 usually to replace and can they print on glossy papers.

VAT isnt charged on food and litrature is this why VAT isnt charged on flyers
Spot on ive been down the road of looking at laser printing and decided it would be good on small case printing a few hundred at a time but to print 10,000 would take about three days constantly thats without having to refill the papper tray every 400 sheets and then turning them over and starting again for the back, I dont think a £500 printer is up to the job.

I am a bit confused.
A leaflet offering a Discount attracts VAT.
So all those 50% off leaflets have vat charged at 17.5%
bit strange

Yes apparantly so. See the website of the inland revenue on vat. Watch out for some printers.
