Last year was the first time I have tried salt and I lost a a really good job due to the stuff.
I told the lads to put it down if they felt the area may freeze and become a hazard.
So on this particular job he did just that. Customer went mental! Said its not good for his drive plus when it rains it washes it into his borders and kills the plants. so he cancelled because "we should ask before using anything out of the ordinary on his property" (a fair point)
Since then I wont use the stuff.

what would you do if the pavement freezes and someone slipped over ...

i bought a 10kg tub of "ice melt" from tesco for a fiver yesterday.i only use it on pathways and sweep excess water away with a sweeping brush first.i usually tell the customer and normally they are very pleased im thinking about their safety.i can honestly say ive never had any problems.good practice IMO.
regards

It could be classed as 'a salt'.

You're chucking the baby out with the bathwater. It would be a rare event for a customer to cancel because of this and I would warrant safety higher than rare risk of losing the odd customer.
