Called to price a job today to remove graffiti from a sandstone building, on arrival I noticed that someone had allready tried to remove it on further questioning I disscovered that the owner had tried to remove it with neat bleach to no affect, so he called in the council who used acid and a high powered pressure washer as it still wouldn't move he called in me, after I explained to the manager that the only way to remove it would be a poultice type operation due to the paint being so far in he was more than happy, on looking closer at the stonework I observed that the sandstone had crummbled due to the high pressure water with bits falling off all over the place. At this point I informed him of the damage to the stone which he was not happy with as a result I informed him I would not take responsibility for any further damage caused, allas he would not sign a dissclaimer so wouldn't touch the job.
My question is would there be another way of removing this spray paint without causing further damage steam had also been tried. ??? ???

Its the acid that has done the damage.
Bloody council cowboys strike again.
I applaud you Malky for walking away.
It was probably calciated stone and they have used neat brick acid on it, they should have not been cheapskates in the first place and called in someone proper from the first place.
To be honest mate further damage would have been caused and maybe slices of stone would have come away.

Gary
stone had been sliced away albeit small ammounts looks like he will be stuck with his graffiti for a while, I beleive the only way to remove it would be a poultice even that may not work due to the damage already done ??? what are your thoughts, I will not be touching this job either way.

Myself I would have done as you have done.
What I normally do is do a small test area and see whats effective.
But on sandstone I never use acid neat as this disturbs the natural compression of the stone and makes it fall apart.
Poulticing is a long drawn out process and even if it doesnt work youve spent hours trying to rectify someone elses cock up.
I have had some astonishing results with celli thinners.

Cheers Gary I only charge on results that is why this job is a non starter anyway someone else can have this one
