Title: Makes me cross
Post by: M.Acorn on October 31, 2012, 11:30:03 am
Bit of a rant, why is it people turn up their noses ?
Why is it that people don't mind paying £700 >£1200 pcm for a rental property, but when you hand them a quote for £175 for a 3 story town house with approx 800 sq ft of minging filthy carpet they look at you like you have just butchered one of their kids. ?
Just can't get my head around it

If you don't need the work no sweat.
If you do, I have to say this, "lower your prices"

Sounds like a fair price to me. It could be they called someone else first and had an unrealistic price put in their head.

Know what you mean Mark, did a similar quote large rural old house approx 800 square feet, no parking outside so have to carry equipment over the road and up a flight of 15 steps to get to the house, quoted £195, which was heavily discounted to allow for empty house and volume discount (over 3 rooms).  Oh the cleaners are coming in the morning can you come after lunch and do it, yeah right, I said to do the job right it would take around 5 - 6 hours. Some people..........arraggggggggggggggg

£175 for what? Maybe 4.5 hours work.
Tradesmen round here at the mo are working
for £120 - £130 a day, they have to to get the
work.
I should know my brother and father are both
s/e tradesmen.

John, I was a Steel Fixer before this, used to get around £120 a shift (when I finished 10 years ago)

But what relation has that got to do with this? carpet cleaning is running a business.

I don't know why cleaners moan about £150 (after expenses) for half a days work?  Whats wrong with these people? ::)

The point I was making originally was how come people don't mind spending upwards of a grand a month on someone else's mortgage.
But when you give them a reasonable price for cleaning the minging carpets of the house they have occupied for over 2 years, they turn up their noses.
I cleaned the house over 2 years ago and charged £250, so I reduced my price for this quote by £75, as work is a bit slow.
They even commented on how good the carpets looked when they moved in, as I said I cleaned them

The point is most people would probably think it's an unreasonable price, what makes you think it's reasonable?

Everything is relative , Cambridgeshire is a reasonably well off area, people earn above average .A 4 bed house around here is going to cost a lot more to rent than a 4 bed house in other areas of the country.

The price you quoted seems perfectly reasonable to me. It's only human to think it's the economy or peoples expectation that it should be cheap, but I don't think that gets anyone out of a hole.

Start asking yourself and them lots of questions. Maybe you think you are still selling the benefits but have slipped out of the habit, maybe you don't say why others may give a cheaper service. etc

Even if you don't get the work on the next 20 jobs you don't hear back from give them a call and get information. Were they happy, what did they pay would they use them again etc.

If you feel you really are on a bad run give them three prices low med (your normal price) high and see what they go for. You may be surprised, also if they go cheap give them what they would have got off someone else with a buffer a smile.

It's not a half days wages is it?

Take out tax, advertising, materials, van, replacing gear, uniforms, holiday pay, sick pay......

apart from the 2 highlighted points... which is not a lot of money on the figures quoted.... You pay the rest regardless of whether you get the job or not......

Better to get something in than sit at home all day with high principles and no money...  :P

I think that the £175 is not a bad price... I would charge that and use a BUFFER and a SMILE to do the job  :P :P

£175 for half a days work. Its the least you should expect. You will never get that day in day out but its what you should be aspiring too. Even if you got this everyday for 5 days a week and 48 weeks of the year it only amounts to £84000. Sounds a lot doesn't it, but it would only just take you above the vat threshold.
Take off all your overhead, (the marketing costs to achieve this would be very high) set aside for vehicle and equipment renewals and you are left with just a bit more than the average wage. For running your own business you deserve that at least.

The thing is people don't give a damn about your advertising, tax,
marketing, holiday pay etc they just see you on £300+ a day and
think whoa.
They would probably relate to fuel and materials but after that.
I know my outgoings last year worked out at just about £125 per
working week and I bet that is way low for some on here.

Mark, you mention them paying all that rent to pay the landlords
mortgage......the thing is they have no choice about that they do
about having cleaning done.

I come highly recommended by the agent they are renting off though, so do they risk getting someone cheap in, who may or may not do a decent job, at the risk of the agent not being happy and then possibly have to pay to have them done properly by me.
It's happened before, tenant has tried to get mr cheap to come back out to do a proper job and they didn't want to know.
All my work comes with a free return visit, where I will clean whatever it is for free again, if there are any problems, I always over qualify with customer, so I don't get called back, well about 3 times in 8 years, which in the grand scheme of things is not too bad

£125 a week.  Are you sure your calculators working.

Assuming your full time working 4-5 days a week every week.

£125 a week seems cheap to me and I hardly advertise
Title: Re: Makes me cross
Post by: Craigp on November 01, 2012, 06:45:12 pm
£125 a week is only £6,000 per year over 48 working weeks.

My Fuel bill last year was £4,500 so I think you got that wrong somewhere, unless you ride a bicycle to jobs, use dry foam with a bucket and sponge and get all your work word of mouth  ;D

Working 4 - 5 days a week.
How many miles a week you do for that kind of fuel
bill?
Some days I can do 3 jobs and do less than 10 miles.
Rarely do more than 20 miles in a day.
Work wise 80/90 miles a week so 2 gallons of diesel
£15 max.
Stick another fiver on for going to quotes so £20 max
a week for work.

Works out more like £145 per week.
Worked the figures out over a 52 week period
but only actually worked 45 weeks.
I like 3 weeks on my jollies in Summer.. ;D

Yeah, i'm slightly agreeing with John on the expense front. I do a fair amount of work and I spend around £40 a week on diesal. 52 weeks x £40 = £2080 a year. Thats working 6 days a week and the odd quote on sundays too.

Thats driving a swb transit van.

Alot of guys on here must cover a very large area.

Suppose doing home quotes also doesn't help the fuel bill.
