Just brought a vivaro 2900 CDTI today
I understand that the gross weight is 2900
Can someone please explain in simple terms what exactly that means. I am confused about grosss weight, kerb weight, payload, etc !!!!
Whats the largest tank that I will be able to fit in it ?
A 1000 litre will fit, but is the van capable of carrying a 1000 litre tank full of water ?
Please explain because I am completely confused
cheers

2900 is the max weight of the vehicle fully loaded
Kerb weight is the weight without anything in and payload is what you can put in it
For the make you have that would be 1256kg of load inc people etc

Cheers guy
But still confused !!

Put in a thousand liter tank and you might find it difficult to insure. This weight will just kill a Vivaro as they do suffer with weight strain of box and clutch.etc.

if it was me then i would stick a 650lt tank in it ..gives you enough room weight wise for all the other bits you need, hosereels, poles, petrol etc and 2 people in the van.

if you put in a 1000l system in that payload an a couple of people it would be over the payload when you counted all the things needed in the van I wouldn't be worried about the clutch

Tony first thing you need to know on this subject is that 1 litre of water weighs 1 kilogram (kg).
Therefore 250 litres of water weighs 250 kg.
Now then, how much water will you be carrying at the start of your busiest day?
I'll help with step 2 once you tell us that mate.

Looking to carry 500 litres plus day

Tony,
the most important figure you are looking for is payload - the rest is irrelevant IMHO. Payload is what the van will carry including tools, accessories (roofrack/roof bars, bulkhead,) driver and any passengers, and fuel.
Lets see what you want.
500 litre baffelled tank - 35kgs
When full the water weighs 485kgs. According to Wyedale the tank manufacturers the baffels reduce the volume of water the tank holds.
Tank frame - 15kgs
Hose reel with 100 meters minibore full of water - 30kgs.
Ladder - 10kgs
Roof bars - 15kgs.
Leisure battery, pump. pole and accessories 25kgs.
Yourself - 100kgs
Tank of diesel - 80kgs
Towbar - 20kgs (if fitted)
If all those weights are correct then this comes to 815kgs.
So as a single operator you could get away with a LWB Transit Connect L as it has a payload of 825kgs. But the moment you add additional equipment/people then the figures change.
500 litre baffelled tank - 35kgs
When full the water weighs 485kgs.
Tank frame - 15kgs
2 x Hose reels with 100 meters minibore full of water - 60kgs.
Ladder - 10kgs
Roof bars - 15kgs.
Leisure battery, pumps. poles and accessories 35kgs.
Yourself plus your mate - 200kgs
Tank of diesel - 80kgs
Towbar - 20kgs (if fitted)
Again, if these weights are correct then the total weight carried is 955kgs.
In the second situation you need to be looking at a Vivaro or equivalent with a payload of about 1200kgs.
I have a Citroen Relay SWB, payload 1154kgs with a 650 litre tank, 2 man operation. This is fullly laden on the odd occassion when 2 of us go out together.
My son has a 52 plate Peugeot Partner 800LX (800kg payload). We have fitted a 500 litre tank, single operator. With a full tank and him the vehicle is OK weightwise (payload). If I get in, then his van will be overloaded if he has a full tank of diesel.

I have the LWB Dispatch 59 plate and took it down to our local weigh bridge out of curiosity to see what it weighed fully laden with all my equipment and with two of my sons who are 17 and 18 and was surprised that although its a 2900 KG total weight it was only 50KG off the top limit.
That is with a 650 Litre tank.
You get a print out of weight details, just handy to keep in the van.
