Spent the last two weeks looking for a decent van.
I have £4k to spend and been looking at vivaro/trafic which are the same spec. Reading the reviews however they appear to have problems with engines and gear boxes. Several trade guys said dont touch with a barge pole.
Been advised to get a Merc vito, bit more money but more reliable.
Any comments or advice?
Looking to put 1000 litre tank in which ever I can get

out of the two you chose i`d say vito, but neither van will hold 1000ltr you would need a renult master or equivelant, even the merc sprinter doesn`t have the payload for 1000ltr unless you get the model with twin axle. other option for that size tank is iveco daily but also have thier problems

Ford Transit T300 will, but to be honest you are not going to get much for 4 grand.
Try ex Bt fleet all have service records and go for trade prices. Picked mine up with 31,000 and paid just under 6 grand and at the time was a 5 year old van.

i would look out for a expert type van to be honest with the higher pay load.
vivario had problems pre 05
vitos are to dear to run and on parts ;)

Vito's rust like F**K
-
Viito is a rust bucket!
-
Go for a Toyota is the only larger van I would buy or VW.
-
got a vw transporter 1000 tank good as gold . 51 plate ;)
-
even though they rust its surface rust , Vitos being made of Kraut steel dont usually rust right through
-
Dont look good though does it ... rust looks like rust

If you dont mind being unfashionable then look at the LDV Maxus high payload and cheap to buy and run
have 1000 ltr's in mine plus gutter vac - genny - all other equipment and 2 people
should get a 56 plate for around 2k
for payloads goto whatvan you can select your van and model and the payload is listed - many vans only have 1000kg
payload wheich means only 600 ltr tank time you have added on petrol/staff/reels/the tank weight itself

Merc Vito pre 2003 max payload 1050 Kg post 2003 you will need the 3t extra long to carry 1100 Kg

Mate has one on a 54 plate with the nearside sill falling apart and holes in the offside door.
'E' class Mercs have a terrible rep for rot resulting in some loosing the front cross member and dropping the engine on the road.
Some years are ok but I wouldn't put much faith in any of them because it's been going on since the seventies.
