I of course run two vans. Depending on your area during a drought when a hose pipe ban is inplace, window cleanrs are free to carry on a s normal unless the drought level is raised to the next stage.
The reason for this was that FWC etc. convinced DEFRA that banning window cleaners from using water fed pole would mean window cleaners would have to go back to using ladders therefore creating a potential Health & safety risk.....
..... I think its right for me, but , I question it sometimes when a 650L takes over 2000L to fill a tank. Some system do this. I try to keep the flow to a trickle if I can going down the drain.
Surley my business is counterproductive during a hose pipe ban. What do you guys think about this? Your thoughts?

Simply turn the waste to 50/50 and thats 1300L (saving of water right there)
what window cleaners use is a very small drop in a very large Pond imo, drinks companies use a dam sight more than we ever could.
I understand if people cannot drink then we should stop, but whilst the large companies carry on so should we be able too.
I can 100% we a law suit being brought if they did try to impose a ban as this would (as said) would breach The Health and safety at work Act amoungst other things.

Everyone should be banned from using water when there is a shortage.
It's easier and cheaper than building new reservoirs to cope with the extra demand!
-
I have no problem with not working though a hose pipe ban.
Of course I would expect the water companies to pay me my lost takings in compensation, because the hose pipe ban came about because of their mismanagement of the water company.
So if they do pay me compensation, then I hope we have a hose pipe ban for the next 20 years
-
Were do you draw the line do all businesses using water also stop with water usage.I find it a joke to see a water shortage in the U K. I lived in a desert for 30 years of my life and never saw rain for four years at a time but never had a shortage. It was so dry the wind would blow the sand over the main road and when you get up in the morning the road is out of sight. There is something wrong in our country when we have so much rain and we cannot catch it and store it. Maybe to much bureaucratic crap and not using the river we have due to having to declare a drought first and then only can we fill reservoir up.

Yes,
Ban ban ban!!
I don't like windows anymore so it would be great news for me.

My thoughts are you have been sniffing the tippex thinners again .............
stating the obvious but not being allowed to work in drought conditions is counter productive to my bank balance and my employees wage packet.
when they renew the entire pipe system to stop loosing billions of gallons a year thru leaks then I may feel bad about working during a drought but until that happens then as they say in the Army .... Tango Sierra ;)

i dont believe the FWC convinced DEFRA of anything! - The hose pipe ban was stopping domestic water users from using a hosepipe to clean their cars and water the garden. Businesses were not affected. The reason? how much would the government lose in income tax and corporation tax from all types of companies who use lots of water. The answer is untold amounts!! I think that the FWC would like you all to think they had long and drawn out discussions to sort this out.Do they really have that sort of clout?(or any clout come to think of it)I think not.

Are you for real? what bloody drought its ped with rain for nearly 6 months, the wettest year on record, and our climate is getting wetter not drier. Its took nearly two driest winters to get near a hosepipe ban. Mate you must have some crap set up if your using that much water to make 650 ltr.

what is a drout near glasgow there is no problem even in a dry year there is plenty rain ;D

SHUT UP AND CARRY ON.

this is a green and pleasant land as they say for a reason :)

I thought this forum was all about discussing up to date topics. :(
We are almost in November after the wettest summer for years. Why would anyone want to think about hosepipe bans?
Lee, are you running out of new ideas? I have one for you....... Is Newspaper as good as muslin cloth for cleaning coal dust off the scullery windows? ;)

It was not just the FWC that disscussed the problems with defra
The HSE played a very big part in disscussions
There was a colective of persons involed
I will say that the FWC is still involed with disscusions with defra on behalf of the window cleaning industry

Slumpy Dog I totally agree. Its not just rain. Snow grinds us to a stop too where as places like Alaska are still moving. But maybe that is the issue... other countries have this type of extreme weather, droughts, baltic weather as part of their geographical make up of their region and these things are there like clockwork. Here we are supposed to experience mild elements of these things.
It was in the news last night that scientists are starting to look at wether or not the UK is experiencing a climate change as floods for example used to have a season, now they are all year round. And amazingly, floods can immediately follow a drought. Crazy s**t, right?
What made me laugh about last nights news was that the scientists have deiced to work out if it is a climate change or if its just because we have more people lol not very scientific feeling that opening line is it?, 'more people'.... lol

If forced back onto ladders even for a few months, the lower income would probably mean that I couldn't pay my way.
However, even though I believe that the water companies are negligent, I would be grudgingly prepared to make certain sacrifices. Things like going DI only (more expensive) to save water (in spite of 200 TDS from the mains) and possibly doing reachable ground floor windows by hand. I would probably need to work longer hours to make up the shortfall but I'm not totally inflexible.
I would draw the line at drinking my own p though.

That is a valid point.... water companies waste so much themselves.... Seen it many times - bust water pipes forcing water up through the roads for days at a time...
