Title: Unger telescopic pole
Post by: Steve H on October 12, 2012, 07:17:44 pm
Hi Guys,
Im looking to get a longer telescopic pole (for trad) and as i have Unger tools i was wondering if anyone uses one now. I need to know if i can easily fit my current tools on there i squeegee, applicator and possibly a soft brissled brush for hard to reach windows ie cant reach with a ladder.
Any suggestion guys, from those that might use a longer pole... thanks
Steve

I bought a 5 section Unger pole earlier this year.

It has the standard green fitting on the end that takes all Unger squeegees, mops, etc.

You can use it only after you spend ages trying to work out in which order the screw clamps have to be undone and then done up in order to extend the pole and then collapse it.

;D can't say I had that problem you nugget ;D although it hurts when you collapse it to quick and catches your skin between clamps :-[

This one - what order do the clamps undo and do up in then? Every time I use it, it does my head in.

for the day-to-day i use a Harris pole, fitted with a tip from an Anza pole (both are in BnQ .

i too have one of those green Unger 5 part poles, they are very awkward to use and heavy as hell, hated by all who use it.

I would have thought it would be too heavy for trad work especially at full extension. I use it for spraying gutters, etc, with virosol or similar and for that it's ideal because it doesn't bend much.

are you being serious, top clamp throw up the section next clamp down and so on, it is just a trad pole but bigger

I showed my missus what I meant about trying to undo one clamp and then the one turns round underneath so as she can say it, because I'm no good at explaining, and then I type it.

Anyway, she actually called me a dork and undid and then done up the clamps with no trouble at all. I've been trying to do it in reverse order to which it should be done.

Jeeeeez. I feel a right wally.  :-[

ah I am with you now, I used to not on purpose try loosen top clamp and the second one would move, I wrapped insulating tape round the sections so It didn't fully collapse and I could grip the pole below the clamps as opposed the clamp below, does that make sense? it works

your missus must have strong wrists  :)     ,those Unger clamps are a killer to open and close quickly .

i find that the first 2 sections of that Unger 5 parter are very useful in domestic trad work and they are very light too,but the 3 bigger heavy sections are where the hate comes in bigtime.
i use 4 sections every week on a few 3 storey jobs with a Wagtail squeegee atop but dont think ive ever used all 5 sections

Stu - I must be in stupid mode tonight. Do you mean use insulating tape like this?

Robert - yes, my missus does have strong wrists. I don't want to brag about 'size matters' but..........  ::)

eh yes just make sure you can grip the pole/section and twist the clamp above, but that is the idea yes, I even did the same with harris poles, the down side is the closed length is longer

just a thought but another tip is not to tighten the clamps when collapsed, then you can throw up the sections and just tighten as you extend :)

Cheers for that. Problem well and truly solved and, yes, for some odd reason I had been tightening the clamps when the pole was collapsed. I havn't been doing very well in the IQ stakes with that pole.

I'm wfp and I hardly trad at height anymore but even with 4, I should think it's difficult but with 5 sections, trading would be nigh on impossible.

I have never used 5 sections as a trad pole though I would if I had to, I used it as my first wfp pole

my 4th section is on the bottom of a harris pole to get a little extra height, and the fifth section is holding up my wooden garage roof ;D the three sections were stolen by a pikey for scrap :'(

Going back to the original question..... Unger do a soft brush (flocked) that screws straight onto the end of their trad poles. I think it's called 'Hi Flow Brush' or something similar. It's also great for things like cleaning up frames on a first clean and stuff like that.

Just found it. Half way down the page.

i have the unger 5 section teleplus pole as well.i only use the first 3 sections.i have a vice versa(squeegee and mop combined)and an angle adaptor if needed.also a fixiclamp for detailing with a microfibre.

i can fit all my trad tools on them and it does come in useful for a few jobs a month.

in fact during the snow a few years ago i used it on domestic run of the mill estate work and left my wfp at home! ;) ;D ;D ;D

Thanks chaps for all the info. i must admit i am looking at a normal telescopic pole rather than the tele pole, as i only need a pole about 12 or 16 foot at most and have heard the telepoles are heavy and awkward to put up and down. I will have a look at the tele poles, probs look to buy say 3 sections only - I will have a look at the links to see if i can get the right cone etc to fit on the end so i can click my tools straight on there.

Does anyone know if the Lewis pole will take the unger tools - i think one guy said it will, i will have a look at that as well, cheers guys.

PS Any links to best place to buy these would be much appreciated - i have the link to the window cleaning warehouse which seems decent

Cheers

Steve

They all tighten in the same direction and un-tighten in the opposite direction.  You just have to 'nip them' for them to work; don't over tighten.  And get yourself some replacement collar thingies, 'cos they wear out.  They cost next to nowt too.  These poles are tough too.  Don't bend the slimest pole, otherwise it becomes a pain trying to get it in and out (phnaar phnaar) of the section it slips into.

I don't like them though; these are really outdated poles.  Heavy, bendy, and there's a lot of better stuff out there.  For trad, anything above 18 foot I really wouldn't bother.  These things wobble like 'eck.

For WFP, go to Gardiners and get a CLX or SLX or sommat.

I don't use it for trad work at all or for wfp. I use it for spraying chemicals at height onto guttering, sofits, facias, etc.

I don't think I'd last a day using that for wfp. I have an ionics pole and that's bad enough but to use that monster pole.....

I used it daily for 2 years wfp ;D left the last two section in the van though and only used them when needed, my brother still uses his 8 years on :o

Ian, (or anyone who can answer) if converting to wfp, what equipment would you need to convert the pole?

Also for those still trading would you feel it best to use a swivel squeegee on the end for the higher to reach windows (i see Unger do a 30 degree angles squeegee for the end of the pole) or can you get away with a normal squeegee that you would use for the downstairs windows ?

Thanks in advance

Steve

http://www.windowcleaningwarehouse.co.uk/shop/poles-and-accessories/unger-thread-adapter-for-alu-poles.html

one of these then add and angle, brush, and pole hose and you are done and a connector from pole house to reel, back pack or trolley

don't know about the angled squeegie I only ever use a normal one

I've always used a standard squeegee that be be adjusted to any angle you need. If you get the tension just right you can angle the squeegie by pushing it against the window frame when using a pole.

The one I use is made by Unger but other companies make them also.
