Hi Guys
Can anyone help, done a quote for a custy today, she was happy with the price but had question which i not had before?
She had disabled son in wheelchair so had the carpet glued to the underlay and was wondering if HWE would loosen the glue and lift the carpet, have any of you come across this before??
Cheers

Why would you want to soak the carpet so that the backing would even get wet??

In most adapted housing, the carpet is very low profile, with non permeable rubber backing, which alows thorough cleaning and disinfectation.
You should be perfectly safe in using HWE to clean this type of carpet, but try to confirm I I disagreeumptions.

This sounds like a twinstick installation. The underlay is glued to the floor then the carpet is glued to the underlay. The glue that is used for bonding the carpet to the underlay is normally what is known as a 'soft set adhesive' this means that it does nt dry hard but remains flexible to allow the carpet backing to flex under footfall.
These adhesives are usually emulsions i.e water based so I would guess that introducing moisture might well cause them to soften and break bond.
However as John has said above why wet the carpet so much that your going through the backing it's just asking for trouble.

I have fitted thousands of metres of this type of installation.
It is known as the Duarafit or System 10 method. a surface tackifier is applied to the sub-floor and allowed to go off. Then the underlay is placed on top. Permanent adhesive is then applied to the special underlay and then the carpet is laid into the adhesive wet. The installation is then rolled or pushed out with a heavy glider before being trimmed in at the edges (a small gap is left between the underlay and the wall so that the carpet can be tucked). As already said, you will not wet the carpet enough to worry about especially because the underlay and carpet are one, the suction is fantastic.
