Title: Rain gear, anyone got a solution?
Post by: Sean Dyer on September 25, 2012, 08:32:45 am
Its still hammering down in manchester , as usual

Has anyone got a solution to what to wear to not be soaked in ten mins as my gear is not standing upto it as it isnt really meant for this kind of rain and so im home wet after a few hours?

want something i can stay warm and dry in all day (not the house or van)

anyone know what trousers / coat combo is working for them for torrential downpours but is breathable and doesnt restrict movement

have a look on ebay for sailing coat and trousers. they are designed to be battered by water and wind and are lightweight and warm.

wore my brothers north face jacket whilst out on his canal boat, we were in the rain for 3 and a half hours, I was quite impressed by it

i wear goretex boots and jackets and craghoppers pants.

bergaus, north face, paramo, mountain gear etc are all totally waterproof.they are not cheap though but work and keep you dry without sweating too much!!!

i bought a bergaus "hurricane" goretex jacket yesterday.this is for leisure mainly but i will use it for collecting.£162 from go outdoors.

then i have a shorter goretex north face jacket for work which was £150.great jacket.i wear a fleece underneath and it keeps me totally dry and warm.

rab/mammut and some of the other mountain/ski gear is even better but they are even more expensive usually but these are for very extreme conditions.

i find the goretex stuff very comfortable and light..........oh and did i mention they keep you dry? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

goretex boots everytime .the bergaus boots are fantastic IMO and they are lightweight, fit well, very comfortable and keep my feet bone dry.they usually last me around 18 months worn every day for work before needing replacing.

hope this helps

I have a goretex jacket {£80 from Arco} goretex over trousers {golf ones, years old} and waterproof boots {£40 ebay}. I worked in Sale for three hours in the driving rain yesterday and the only parts of me that got wet was my face and hands. it was still horrible though. I only did the jobs that were "booked in" and I hate not turning up. Got a few more to do today  :(  when it's this hard, I normally don't bother.

logo d polo shirt
logo d fleece
north face goretex jacket
craghoppers "solardry" pants
bergaus goretex boots
nitrile glove liners,showa 377 gloves
gardiners baseball cap(to stop rain getting into eyes when looking up!)
beanie hat (for when its very cold!)

all the above allows me to work longer in bad spells of weather without being too uncomfortable.yes ive spent a fair bit on all this gear but i think its essential when working out in all weathers.

I've just got back in from an on and off wet day. Having tried many things over the years I now use the following gear:

Crag-Hoppers Solar-Dry Trousers
Crag-Hoppers Solar-Dry long sleeve shirt.
Various makes breathable base layer for when weather is slightly colder
Thermal breathable base layer for cold weather
All cotton Sports socks from M&S
Clarks Gore-tex walking type shoes

Then for when the weather gets colder :
Musto high-performance fleece

And for when the weather gets really wet:
Musto soft shell red coat with hood - this has never failed to keep me dry and even has dry-zips on the pockets. You cannot buy these any more as they have stopped making this exact model, but I have just sourced a replacement one from one of their factory outlet stores.
I then have a cheap pair of pull-on waterproof trousers for when it gets even wetter.

With the above combination I can stay very dry no matter what I am mad enough to work in.

I always find anything made in Gortex is brilliant in the rain, designed to let the heat out as well so you dont get too hot and sweaty (bit of wishful thinking but there you go) not cheap but worth it in the long run.
My question would be, do you guys use gloves, im talking when the cold kicks in? i'm not being soft but dont fancy the cold this year, so any suggestions on gloves would be great - thanks
im still trad by the way - not wfp - so need gloves that can be used for trad.

thanks in advance guys

Steve

I use just the standard wet suit from local hardware store (tare resistant) that go over ur normal work clothes. If u think ur gonna be to hot just wear somrthing light under it like t shirt and tracksuit bottoms or fleece and heavy bottoms if it really cold. I used to wear this when this when i was building blocks b4 resession and worked ok but if its heavy persistant rain it will eventully start to seep through to ur cloths around neck and sleaves.

Dazmond... are those "glacier "perfect curve" gloves" water proof? or are they just neoprene? because i have some neoprene gloves from gardiners which are no good when its freezing (as you probably know). they are good on cold days though cos the water gets trapped in and your own body temp warms the traped water up!

thanks

I think they meant rain proof work wear for window cleaning, not for your other night time job.
