Just had a call from a hugh end client who has had the bird in the chimney disaster and soot on his many persian rugs. Now for general cleaning i have excellent results on top rugs with organic sponges but i dont think these will remove enough of the residue somehow so i am i ultrapac territory or is there something less potent i can try before. All help much appreciated guys/gals as usual...................Alan

Last time I had a sooty bird problem I used Solutions HD and luke warm water..
I was using HWE at the time too....
But there is probably something better out there...

Thanks Hector i am looking at them tomorrow and want to be armed with the best product even if it means delaying the clean to get it..............Alan

I have been told that Johnson Baby Powder is the product to use on soot,
I have only used it once on a very small area , I covered the soot with the powder and then vac'ed off, I then cleaned with Host sponges , it worked really well, not 100% sure, but the soot attached's itself to the powder ?? , so making it easier to vac off ??

First vacuum or dust to remove as much as possible.
Then clean with your hwe machine, adding a soot remover.
Finishing with an acid rinse.
Take a few pictures.

If it's really bad HWE won't cut it, they're going to need a soak and a squirt (stop me if I'm getting too technical). Nowt wrong with using ultrapac at 1:50 if that's what's needed but they'll need a really thorough rinse out and an acid rinse applying. I'd test a slightly less extreme product first but got to be honest mostly have had to resort to ultrapac to get the result.
Just make sure you test for dye bleed, especially reds next to creams.
To be honest if they're trashed by the soot how much worse can you make them? The vast majority of Persians you'll encounter should be colourfast

We used to do loads of these for British Gas.
Vacuum off as much as possible but keep the vacuum nozzle off the surface of the rug or carpet as you will just rub it in further.
Then the best 3 products I found were Champion, Ultrapac or watered down Citrus gel. Spray on, gently agitate then quickly rinse out with Fibre & Fabric Rinse.
Never failed even on some very high end materials.

I was expecting a very very very long post from Jim but I think he thinks people on here won't read it ;D but the key is test test test, you know your going to have to hit it hard with a specialised product but like John Kelly said the results should be good/spectacular.
