Title: Advice/Help please - WFP jobs I can't do and a quote for a school
Post by: Joseph Michael on September 10, 2012, 04:01:44 pm
Hi guys

I have just started out and I am getting all of my work by canvassing. Last week I went and done a job and it turns out that they also want their conservatory roof done, but I am unable to do this as I don't have the equipment. Then the nextdoor neighbours asked me to quote for them, but they also have a small conservatory roof which comes away from the house, with a couple of windows above, which also requires a WFP. I told both households that I would be back next month (both jobs are monthly) and that I would sort it out for them. Truth being that I didn't want to lose the jobs. So, what do you think I should do? Pass the jobs on/sell? Swap them for jobs that I can do (Trad).? Get help.?? I obviously don't want to just let them down.

Also, One of my customers has asked me to quote for his school (Headmaster apparently). They have not had a window cleaner for years and they were just about to start looking, but he told me it is a very big job.! He was impressed with my work and said he would love to put the work my way. The problem is that the job will obviously be too big for me but I did say I would go along, have a look and give him a quote. What do you think.?

Any help/advice on either, or both of the above would be much appreciated.

Regards

Joe

Why would the school be too big a job for you??

If it will take you 2 days to do it, then tell the bloke..... He likes your standard of work, so you tell him how long it will take and how much money you want... then it is up to him to accept it or not.....

As for the other parts of your questions, I cannot advise... sorry....

I used to just miss the windows above conservatory's and price accordingly

the school I would need to see, but you would be surprised on how many windows can be done in a day when it is all in the one place so don't rule out being able to handle it

I agree, get someone to help you out with the school. You'll get a share of the money but more importantly you'll learn loads from the wfp guy.
Good luck
Cheers

why bring some one else into the picture? just price the windows on the houses not including the windows he can't do and quote the school himself, give the roofs to some one else by all means

surely you can afford a cheap waterfed pole stick a hoselock connector on it and connect to there outdoor tap then you may even get an old spare pole of a wfp window cleaner in you area

agree with richy wilts and PF if you are not confident in quoting the school at least go take a look without anyone else, no reason you couldn't do it your self, it might just be a primary school with not much work involved, and most commercial buildings can be cleaned from the inside, if ladder work worry's you

Just to update - Basically, I can't afford a WFP at the moment, I don't even have a van yet, I am walking everywhere until I get some funds.!
i started like that m8,walking round with a friggin bucket! but no bova, had to be done. now i got 120 custys all very happy. just got a buisness loan through new enterprise, only 9% and am ordering pole tommorow which means more work again. i go halfs on a car with me dad so i can afford it,its all worked out perfect. best advice, try to do a better job than the others, dont rush, too much! get a wagtail, awesome kit. and most of all, people go for personality, be friendly, show respect, turn up on time, specialy to the elderly, it matters to them. watch youtube, always strive to get better. you'll go far my friend. tenacity determines capacity.

I have had some great advice on this, and I will get back to everybody I said I would when I have an update, I haven't been to the school yet. Thank you everybody. I would also just like to say in the short time I have been working and canvassing that what Paul has said is quite right - Be polite when canvassing, if people say to me No thank you, or that they have a window cleaner already I just tell them thank you and sorry to trouble you (and smile) It is surprising how many people stop you and ask for a card or even actually say that they do want a window cleaner now. And when working, and this probably goes without saying really, just do the best job you can, customers have then asked me to do other work or passed my details to friends and relatives. It's all good.!
