I was about to post in the TDS Meter thread but decided to set off a new debate.
How high do you recon you water TDS can be ?
I personally don't worry about must have 000. I feel between 000 and 005 is fine.
I had a bloke work for me a few years ago when I was on holiday.
He never changed the resin and the water was 020. No complaints.

25-30 MAX

25-30 MAX
25-30 ? :o :o :o
Really? and you don't get any spots ?
Thats amazing :)
be interesting to know how many reach up to that number.
-
I used to change when it got to 002 no fail then i got a bit lazy n change when i could be bothered think i have been to 016 with no problems without spotting
-
We work up to 010. At that point we change the resin. Bear in mind that TDS meters should be calibrated, so unless you do the figure your meter gives could be a few ppm's out either way.

cleaned on tuesday with 076 and windows were spotty though only really bad on wooden frames. was fine the previous days clean though (fri as bank hol mon). i go up to 010 but have been known to go higher, say 020 and have no problems.
when i first started i thought pure had to be 000 to clean windows and dumped 400L because it had reached 001

25 - 30 with no problems of spotting.
I done my van windows the other week with a tds of 38 and they still looked ok.
I've used filtered rain water with a tds of 29 and apart from some of the unfiltered little bits of dirt, the windows were spotless.

15ppm max
-
I aren't much for windows anymore.
-
Generally I use up to 10 ppm
But it's seems you can get away with 30ppm on a cloudy day, I've found that on sunny days you get away with less.
-
I take it you guys are keen on the new Ionics "Parts per Billion" filter ::)
-
Well many thanks for your help guy, I am so grateful for your help, you have saved me quiet a bit money :)
I will try up to 020 next time to see what the result is.

Answering the original question - got to 16 without problems in the past.
However, if you go to a twin DI setup then:
1. You'll save money long-term as you'll be getting the most out of your resin
2. It won't cost you a penny more in resin if you stick at a TDS of 000 rather than letting it rise, so you might as well keep it at zero

Am I the only one that wont clean with anything over 000 ppm ??
PPB a little OTT ... what next PPT (trillion)
-
i normally go upto 10ppm but once i went upto 37ppm and no spotting, but i have found that this only happens on maintenace cleans, with 1st cleans spotting can be a problem with anything over 000ppm on most windows
-
I let it goto 30ppm before i change mine. Its 24 at mo. has been in 60s before with no probs. ppm at 000 is so over rated.
-
I'm wondering if some can get away with a higher TDS in different water areas. Maybe some dissolved solids spot easier than others.
Mine is at 002 ppm. Originally I was getting 000. I'm wondering if a 2nd DI vessel makes any difference and will return me to a perfect 000 ppm?

my resin goes from 0 to 1 in about a day, I'd be bankrupt!!

Jammy sod

mine comes out at 005 but still put it thru di

With all the rain we have had this last summer we could have got away with anything. It comes out of my tap at 57 which is why I have always gone the double DI route. Even using 0 tds that top frame can still catch you out for spotting.

How do you calibrate the hand held tds meters?

How do you calibrate the hand held tds meters?
You need to buy some calibration fluid.
The calibration fluid will have a number on the label of the TDS, eg. 342ppm.
Place your TDS Meter into the calibration fluid and if you meter reads + or - of 342ppm adjust the small screw at the back of the meter.

I have cleaned with 15 to 20, however although you can get good results with the water that high I have noticed that when the water is 0000 it cleans faster. I can tell if my resin is starting to go without measuring the water as it won't cut through grime as easily.
