I have scrapped a few batteries over the years, this morning working with my brother and my battery was almost dead after 2 pumps running full on for just 45 minutes, anyway I was resigned it was time for another new battery when my brother said leave the battery with me, he has a charger that runs through a 8 step reconditioning cycle and reckons it works most of the time.
looked this subject up when I got home and it seems he is correct and I think if I save this battery I will buy one of these chargers instead.
imagine not having to replace batterys
or is this the point when everyone knew this already

i do have a spare 110 amp l/battery that got dropped at my house for £25 ;D ;D
put thinking of run two battery in the van ;)so if old one goes then i know that posably there be a chance i can get it working again

The NEW type battery chargers are nothing like the old type that gave a constant charge, the one I've got (CTEK 7000) can charge a battery on the car without doing any damage to the onboard computer alarm etc. even a dead battery has been given a second chance. It'll charge lead acid, wet batteries, MF, AGM, and most gell bateries. They pulse charge, and when on reconditioning they push 15.7v into the battery.
But they aint cheap I think mine was about £70. but batteries arn't either! especialy for a Diesel. I recon it's paid for it's self again and again
In the 70s we used to put a spoonfull of Epson Salts per cell in lead acid batteries and give them a high charge to release any sulphated cell's.

I`m using one of these.,excellent quality,if the battery is not too far gone this type of charger/desulphator will normally bring them back.
I think they are good to use for up to 130AH

I think my brother was recommending this model, he has slightly lower spec

battery ran fine all day today so it seems to have done the trick, my brother says he has only had 1 battery that wouldn't recondition

yes they do seem to, thanks for all the replies lads, that honda one looks good value as well.
you can get an adaptor that charges a van battery through the cigarette lighter as well for a few quid

im in need of a new battery charger.
which is the best one to suit our needs then. which smart charger?

Carl I've got a CTEK 7000 I'ts a bit old now, but they can be left on charge, i.e. if you have a classic that you don't always use you can leave them on for six months with no harm to the battery. or if you need to boost and start you can do that aswell. Or if you want a permanent power supply they can do that. Years ago I used to think that the bigger the charger the better 20 or 30amp the sort that boil the battery! If the acid wernt boiling it wernt charging! (I know i'm an old git!) Now with this one a bit bigger than a bar of soap you dont think that it could cope with a Diesel battery but they do.
If you're after one do a google for 'smart battery charger review' and see whats out there now.

Ive been using the ctek mxs5 for a short time, and find it v useful as it lets u know what the battery is doing, ie: if it can hold a charge - reconditioning - u can leave it connected etc. Ive got 2 pumps runnin of a 110a batt and just rotate it with another batt (left on charge) every couple of days. Flow controllers are a good way of lettin u know whats left in the batt ie: by all accounts, a flat batt is say 12v and fully charged is 13v, they reckon charge it when it drops to 12.2v. But batterys can LIE.
