Hi Geoff.
We use a biocide. A few different ones can be found online. ive been told that you dont HAVE to treat it with anything but ive always found it a good selli g point plus it gives me piece of mind. as you say full ppe. We use respirator masks but its not so bad in open air. enclosed spaces or really heavy soiling we wear suits. Make sure when ordering biocide that its capable of killing bird dropping diseases as some dont. company called sx chemicals i think will sort you. Charge accordingly too. its not a fun job.
EDIT: http://www.pestcontrolonline.com/
sx environmental supplies

Hi geoff,
i used to work for a pest control company years ago we used to spray it with a biocide first then scrape up as much as possible and double bag, then clean with stiff brush and biocide again.
there was a lot of issues with the pigeon fouling entering the drainage system so we where made to do this before pressure washing.
the biocide we used was px ornikill http://www.killgerm.com/product-group.php?group=50
also on ebay.

it is really good stuff. my dad breads birds and he never has any problems with mites or anything, my mate gets it for him my dad has about a 2 year supply of the stuff.
if interested I can probably put you in touch with someone who can get it cheap. I don't know how much he would charge as he gives it to me for my dad.
