Getting paid by cash to avoid paying VAT is morally wrong but fiddling your MP's expenses isn't.

Boris Johnson don't seem to have a problem with it..................
Mr Johnson confessed he often produced a bundle of notes to settle his bills. The Mayor of London said: “I have certainly paid a lot of cash in hand.”

Good 'ol boy!  ;D

The point he was trying to make but didn't do it well was that the cash in hand jobs market hides a lot of other things. benefit fraud, illegal immigration, money being sent abroad etc. As well as tax evasion.

It's about tradesmen and VAT (for those who are registered).

What they mean is not putting the work through the books and not putting VAT on the bill.

The customer gets a 20% discount for cash.

I'm not sure about that. In the sense that if the tradesman is VAT registered, he would want to claim the VAT back on the value of the parts/supplies. It is about tax evasion and to me it seems a way of deflecting attention from the tory backers. First they attacked celebrities and now it is tradesmen.

It's more about the customer getting the work done cheaper.

Yup, it's yet another Tory ploy to point the finger at the masses as being the evil ones in order to try and protect their stinking rich buddies. It's also news fodder for the sensationalist trash daily rags.
