Title: Tayna Batteries - warning
Post by: Carl2009 on July 18, 2012, 05:06:24 pm
Just a warning in dealing with Tayna guys.

I bought a Numax leisure battery charger from them a few weeks ago. Working fine till one morning when I go in the van to disconnect it and I find that its not switched on. Investigation reveals my consumer unit is tripped. I try to switch fuses on and it immediately trips. I disconnect charger and take in the garage and try it on multiple leisure batteries, one even fully charged - same story every time. Connectors are all on the right way so charger is duff.

This is the one I use to charge the battery that runs the wfp setup, so it's important. I email Tayna on the Sunday explaining the problem and that i'll be returning it; could they process asap and send a replacement. I box it up and enclose a letter stating same and send it Special Delivery on the Tuesday. I hear nothing for a week so yesterday I call them, then begin the fun and games...

I spoke to some numpty called Gareth. They've sent it on to Numax to test it. "Did you test it?" - nope, they we just sent it off. Anyway Numax test it and charge 3 or 4 batteries with it and say its fine. I said it can't be - i've been charging batteries for decades and know when something is not right. Nope, its fine Gareth says. Anyway he'll get it back from Numax and check it at Tayna HQ - fine I say. It could have been an intermittent problem or it could be that the unit has been mixed up somewhere along the way - Gareth agrees it could have been.

Anyway he says he'll call me back later. He doesn't, so I call him this afternoon, 24 hours since we last spoke. Yep, he's had the charger back and it's working fine. Right, we aren't going to agree that there may be an intermittent problem or it could be that the unit has been mixed up somewhere along the way so will he send it back. Here's the rub - "Sure - if you pay £7.95 carriage".

Now given most people wouldn't make up a problem with the charger like this (I wasn't asking for a refund - I just want a charger that works), nor would they go to the expense of Special Delivering it over to him - £9.75 out of my pocket, and given the 3 or 4 calls i've made in chasing it all up, wouldn't you think they'd waive the carriage? What poor customer service. Glad I don't run my business this way!

Oh, and in disagreeing with Gareth that i couldn't have mixed up the polarity cost the leads are hard-wired into my window cleaning van numpty Gareth says, "We don't like selling batteries to window cleaners 'cos they always trash them". So if I were you guys i wouldn't buy a battery from Tayna as if you have a problem with it and they find out your a WC they'll probably be as helpful to you as they have been to me.

It's not even the money - it was only about £50. It's the terrible customer service I object to.

Can I make a request of you all - i've already posted on their Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/TaynaBatteries but it might be good if you guys were to get indignant and post a message to them too. Say something like "I hear you don't like selling batteries to window cleaners because "They always trash them". Is this true and if so how do they trash them?"

Cheers

Cheers Ian. I wonder just how we can "trash" batteries? I mean, the reason all this has kicked off is because I bought (an albeit faulty) smart leisure battery charger for charging... leisure batteries!

Righty ho guys - an update. I also posted a review on Trust Pilot - http://www.trustpilot.com/review/www.tayna.co.uk

I also posted on their Blog and on their Forum, as well as Facebook. I also went to Companies House, found out the name of the Director and sent him a message on Facebook, inviting him to discuss the matter with me. I was blocked for their Facebook page and all our messages were deleted, ditto on their Blog and Forum. But Trust Pilot is independant and they can't do anything there, so it remains.

Anyway, they are sending the charger back to me. I'm going to have it checked out for faults here by a local eleccy engineer and if found to be faulty i'll return it with their report; if it's not faulty (I reckon it's either intermittent or they've mixed up the units at their end) i'll bin it as I can't rely on it and don't want it setting fire to my van.

I'd like to thank again those who took time to Facebook Tayna - cheers guys.

Hey, and the weather's getting better!

I know. I was just appalled over how cavalier they were. They basically said 'Tough sh*t". And I don't like that. As i think you can tell.
Cheers Ian.

An update on this.

I got the charger back and took it to an electrical engineer. They did a basic test and found it was fine; they didn't dismantle it. Of course it could have been either:

1. Fine all along and I was at fault (unlikely given the repeated trips of different consumer units)
2. The fault is intermittent
3. The unit is a different unit to one I sent them
4. They made a simple repair, such as replacing an internal fuse or similar slot-in component

Anyway, I feel I can't use it as I feel it could still be unsafe and I don't want it setting fire to my van/garage one night, so i've bought another charger (different brand) from Pure Freedom.

Cheers again all. And remember - avoid Tayna. After all according to them "We don't like selling to window cleaners 'cos they trash batteries"...!
