so im really reved up to get some bigger jobs on the commercial and industrial side of thing now, but im still trying to find out whats the best way to go about it?
ive heard it can be illegal to just phone places that have opted out of sales calls?
so what does everyone do? phone canvass? (and just run the risk of it being illegal?)... email canvass?...or walk in and ask to see the manager or something? or... get a good website thats at the top of search results and let them come to you?
all advice welcome
thanks, george

Your not allowed to call people who have registered with TPS ( telephone Preference Service)
That only normally applies to residential. Hardly ever with commercial. If they say they have just apologise and hang up
Hope that helps

so do you advertise/have a website to get commercial tony?

I have picked a fair bit of work by just dropping off a card at reception and asking for them to pass it on to who ever deals with it.

I picked up a couple of carpet cleans at Edgbaston Cricket Ground some years ago doing this, just dropped the card at the shop and got a call a couple of hours later

George, face to face is better for commercial, just go in and ask do they need a window cleaner!! You will either get a yes or no if no leave a card or letter and try again in six months!!
It's a numbers game and sometimes takes months to get your foot in the door.

if your unsure which position to ask for just enquire whether it would be ok to have a chat with the person responsible for dealing with maintenance and cleaning at the property

Hi George
Commercial canvassing is a different ball game from domestic knocking(I did it for 5years with a blue chip company)
Treat it as a game follow the rules:-
1)your mission ,should you choose to accept it,is only to find out whose in charge of the decision making on your first call
2) to do this ,you have to get past the 'Gate-Keeper' or as Al Murray would say-secretary
3)she will try and bar your passage to her boss like a linebacker in an NFL game even resorting to man handling you should the need arise
4) disarmer attempts with your charm and merely ask for a compliment slip with the bosses name and(if your really charming)she may know who does it at present and when they might be renewing the contract-this compliment slip is your golden ticket to the end game!!
5) now you know the who,the why and the when -record all this info in a rolling diary
6)2 months before they even think about the contract again, you being super efficient data logger ,will know that its time to send your introductory letter to mr Bigwig introducing your company and don't forget to add that you will call him in a few days to discuss the matter further
7) back to gate keeper!! After a few days, ring the company and ask to speak to Mr Bigwig and say to GateKeeper that he is expecting your call and can you put me through please(as blunt as that) She will be used to being ordered around (sorry girls, just how it is!!) and will transfer your call immediately
8)Discuss terms ,sign new contract -pub for beer and back slapping
9)All of the above is of course subject to complete and abject failure but if that happens,go back to point 1
Commissions taken for commercial contracts now being taken 8)
I'm here all week, try the veal
Thank you
Roy
