HI all,
I have a 40/40 RO that produces 50ppm tds from 370ppm tap water. This figure has been rising a little recently, but SUDDENLY so (from 38 or so up to 50) after I changed the pre-filters today. What could be the reason for this? I disconnected the RO and flushed the new filters for a few minutes before connecting it up again. It's all tight, no leaks..
From the RO it goes into a vessel with old resin that brings it down to mid thirties, then another resin vessel that brings it down to nothing..
In your opinion are these figures acceptable or is it time to buy a new RO? And if so, any recommendations are gratefully accepted.. (the water is pumped up to about 75psi).
cheers!

How old is your RO?
-
I THINK I HAVE SPOTTED YOUR PROBLEM, YOU NEED TO PUT RESIN IN THE VESSEL NOT GARDEN FERTALIZER! ;D
-
dammit, but fertilizer is sO cheap!
it IS an old ro, I've been running it for 18months and it was second hand when I bought it...
-
When did you change the membrane & filters last ?

I think you need to change your membrane IMO

aye, I was suspecting as much..
I've never changed the membrane, but I only changed the pre filters this morning and suddenly the tds jumped up.. any ideas why this is?
-
Maybe the TDS in has risen

I have the same R/O and nearly the same booster pump. I changed mine a week ago as the tds was coming out the R/O at 60pm.
Using the H5 membrane it is now coming out at 2 pm and going in at 245pm. We started to go through resin very quick and it was false economy not to change.

Did you disconnect the pre filters from the ro and flush them when you changed them ?
If not then I suspect this is why the tds has suddenly risen from 38 to 50.
Although a product of 38 with a booster pump is not good for a 4040, so reckon you probably need a new membrane too especially as it was second hand.

Regarding the input TDS, that hasn't changed at all,
and Yes I did flush the new filters for a while before reconnecting the RO..

Thanks for that, I shall purchase an H5 immediately or just ring the Junemeister and see what she recommends!

That is what June recommended, but you can get it cheaper from http://www.daqua.co.uk.
Doug is a great bloke and next day delivery.

370ppm is pretty high. You might use a water softener before the prefilters.

My RO is the same one I bought 6 years ago from Peter Fogwill - like the 30 year old spade it's had several handles and several blades! Plus an extra membrane chamber (3 now) to increase output.
So I change the membranes from time to time and the filters etc. as and when the TDS between the membranes and the resin goes up past 20.
It's easy to forget the filters before the membranes and when you do replace it's good to run them through for ten minutes if you can. Like I do after the membranes when I change the resin.
