Title: Van leasing - ideas
Post by: Lee13 on July 04, 2012, 11:18:36 pm
Hi all,

I'm looking to upgrade from my Berlingo with 400 litre tank to a much larger van with a 650+ (bigger tank the better) 2 man setup.

I like the look of the Vauxhall Vivaro Lwb Diesel 2.0CDTI [115PS] Sportive Van 2.9t which has a payload of 1206Kg

Has anyone got one of these? If not what do you recommend?

I'm going to look into insurance etc.. tomorrow, but in terms of a 2 man set up, what size tank would be advisable, bearing in mind payload/insurance and general wear and tear etc... Ie running costs

I would also be only installing a tank and pump etc... As all purification is done separately

Maybe better off buying, I was offered a new  vivaro
For £11k plus vat by perrys Aylesbury. Much cheaper to finance
This than to lease. 4 years service and warranty thrown in.
Cheapest lease deals I found were vanarama . Can get most
Base spec medium vans for £200 per month

I think you are much better off buying than leasing. You are just lining somebody else's pocket when you lease.

A mate of mine has just got one of these new this week ... crew cab with 6 seats and enough space in rear for 500 ltr tank in between the arches along with twin reels. ... great if you need a family vehicle as well.

Sorry.  Yes I agree best to buy.

Please can you explain why you feel this. Pros and cons as well as figures with both leasing and HP and tax implications would also be helpful. Lee13 needs something 'concrete' to make an informed decision. After all, if its best to finance, then why would someone lease?

Here's some figures I've been given just now by a leading leasing firm

4 year leasing - Vauxhall Vivaro

Deposit = 6 monthly payments @ £1164 +VAT = £1397
48 Monthly payments @ £194+ VAT = £11174

Credit acceptance fee @ £125
Registration and Road Tax @ £270

Final balloon payment of £4450+ VAT = £5340

Total cost inclusive of balloon payment and VAT is £18306

I've been informed that the van "should" be worth around £8k after 4 years, doing around 10,000 miles a year.

Alternatively I have found this on Perry's site -

http://www.perrys.co.uk/vauxhall-vivaro-2.0cdti-115ps-van-2.9t-euro-5/vans/offer-194634-40983

Which is selling at £15594 inc VAT

I know there are significant tax benefits to leasing, I'm not sure how buying outright compares, but I'm going to do some further research.

I was going to say what best for tax purposes
Buy 1
Lease 1
Finance 1
Get a bank loan

What works out best

There are no more benefits regarding tax with leasing over buying. At the end of the day ALL the money you spend on a van is 100% tax deductible (if you use it for 100% business use)

In fact, buying actually gives you more options on how you go about doing this.

If there is a greater tax saving leasing over buying then this is only because you have spent more of YOUR hard earned money on it in the first place! ;)

Interesting article here

http://blog.taxassist.co.uk/tax-blog/2010/8/9/capital-allowances-on-a-new-van.html

"You should also be aware the new government recently proposed a reduction in capital allowances rates. From April 2012, the maximum amount of AIA will reduce to £25,000, and the standard writing down allowance will also be reduced to 18%"

I bought a Hyundai iload - 1060kg payload. 5 yr warranty. £15,600

For one man operations it is a bit over the top but I have a 650L for two man operation on domestic and this usually lasts on repeat work but in case of needing to work that final extra job I always carry an extra two 25L drums. So 700L available.

If you are doing commercial then you need 800L for two men IMO and so will be better off with a 1200kg limit.

When you go into the leasing office look at the man behind the desk. Ask yourself "who pays for your wages?" then "who pays for this office?"

Why do people lease vehicles? same reason people borrow money off wonga.com

Get a good and serious look at the Merthyr Car auctions site. Somebody I know buys one van a week from there and resells it on ebay. Usually a Sprinter.  Last year he bought himself a £1.5 million farm in the New Forest. Its true, I am not making it up or embellishing the facts. He used to be an ambulance driver. His name is Gary, I have known him since he was a lad. I knew his dad too. His dad was cadet leader in Harrow SJAB when I was there as a kid.

Edit - Having re-read my post, why the heck am I cleaning windows for a living?

Thanks Gold - good advice

Thanks Vince. I understand what you are saying. However the point is I don't have the money available to buy outright, I would need to raise the cash either way. So it's a matter of lease or loan... Either way you pay interest.

Even if I had the cash there, I would still probably either lease or loan as the rest of that money would go some way towards other costs such as advertising and growing the business further. For the sake of saving a couple of grand over 4 years, I think it would be more sensible to spread the cost, in my case anyway. It may of course vary for others.

My first van I leased.

My second I bought outright.

Had I needed finance I would now buy outright unless:-

A) See if the manufacturer was doing a finance deal - e.g. free or cheap credit (less than 6/7%) but check the purchase price isn't inflated first.

B) Go to my bank and tell them I've been offered a good finance deal by the garage/manufacturer - ask what they will offer me. Cost in any "arrangement fees" final purchase fees and see what you actually pay.

I would rather buy with a loan than lease. I would avoid scary "balloon" payments at the end - I'd rather pay £300 a month all the way through and own it than £200 now and £5000 at the end.

And I would consider 2/hand too. From an auction. Or privately a van whose history I deffo knew.

But that's just me.
