Has anyone got any advice on cleaning stairs, such as what tools to use, as I am a little unsure how to go about such a task & want to be fully prepared when the situation arises. Many thanks.

Depending on the severity of soiling, there several tools that I use.
Pre-vacuum is always first.
On relatively clean/light-use stairs, I may encap; using a Makita variable speed polisher with either bonnets or pads.
Or I may use a Cyclo with brushes to really agitate the fibres.
This also has two handles, one long, one shorter so that I can clean the riser going up with the long handle, swap over and clean the treads coming down. This saves a lot of back bending and at Ken's age ;) you need all the help possible. ;D
The stairs can be rinsed with a 40" straight wand.
I also have a "Carpet Hugger" for the bullnose.
This is a smallish upholstery looking type tool which has a semi circle shape cut out of the stainless steel head.
This allows you to clean the leading edge very good.
It is also handy for cleaning the corners on rounded upholstery.
Hope this helps.

Although I have considered using a stair wand I still tend to favour using my CFR handtool. Does a great job and saves hassle switching tools for the nooks and crannies.
If regular three + stories or commercial staircases I'd get a good quality stair wand.

Stairs are an absolute doddle. Using a stair wand or wide handtool its really quick and simple. Pull back the tool whilst spraying, take it right over the nosing and you then wet the riser as well. The riser usually just then needs a drying pass although sometimes there are scuff marks off the toes of shoes.
Don't use the same tool for stairs as you do for upholstery. The grippers can cause little nicks in the tool edge which can ruin a 3 peice.
Products should be appropriate to the type of carpet.

I like the look of that! Never seen one before.
Bit of hassle having to change tools to complete the job though.
