Title: Canvassing
Post by: Roy Cauldery on May 21, 2012, 09:47:09 am
I have set aside 4 days this week to canvass. On one of the days ,there will be two of us doing it
I'm not a professional canvasser but I have built my business on my own canvassed work without ever buying a round.
This may not be for everyone and I know it can be a huge hurdle for some folks to gather the courage just to knock a door.
I have set myself a realistic target of just 20 new customers and plan to let you all know how I get on(warts and all)
This is going to be the motivational tool I need to get out there and get them, coz I have now told you lot about it. :o
This has probably set me up for a fall, but the way I see it, if I dont try I will never know.

I will be starting at 1130 most days and finishing about 16.30/17.00
I will be in uniform-company fleece and t-shirt,clean shaven and nice smellies.Trousers and clean, polished shoes
Stack of leaflets and new customer forms
I have a sheet of A4 paper with 20 boxes on that I will colour in as I get each new one(another motivational tool)
My lovely lady has promised me a special treat if all the boxes are coloured in(what-you need more motivation? 8))
Have installed my PMA and am ready to rock

Will keep you posted

Roy :)

I would also keep a track of those in and out and maybe canvass one evening to catch all the ones you dont get in during the day....

A list showing how many you have spoken to and how many jobs you get is a great motivator, plus you can work out how many people you speak to to get each job....

last week I canvassed for a couple of hours. I put no's and outs on one sheets and new customers on another. Was actually a great marketing tool because when I had about 20 outs and 3 say yes the next lady I spoke to I showed her my little yes sheet compared to my big NO sheet and she felt sorry for me and put and extra to pound on her house! ;D

I also need motivation to get canvassing this week so if you fancy it were can compare notes?

One thing I've noticed today that I never noticed before is the amount of vans out with poles on the roof. I've seen 4 water fed windies today. Never used to see them when I went out a couple of years ago. Oh well I'm sure there's still the same amount of dirty windows out there

It doesnt matter how good a job they do, its a simple fact proved every single day that not everyone has a window cleaner....
Went out this evening on a close near where we have a few houses to do on Friday.
Woman says "Of course we have a window cleaner - everyone has a window cleaner don't they- well they all have in here"
Picked up a £12 and a £18 every 4 weeks out of 20 houses.
So it's true "NOT EVERYONE HAS A WINDOW CLEANER"
Good Luck

I went out for a canvass before for an hour and I picked up one job on a new build estate of about 30 houses. Most pointed at the houses still being built and said that once they were built they would call. Anyway one phoned me at tea time to book me in. I thought wow, they got the roof on, windows in and all the rest of that work do in 3 hours!
Hopefully pick more of these up over the next few months

Any new customers today will be booked on and cleaned friday or saturday this week.
All quotations to be processed and e-mailed wednesday morning and then more canvassing wednesday afternoon.

I hope its not too dull for you all,but just thought i would just impart an insight of what a typical week is like for us.
For all of you out today canvassing(Ian w.w/colley 614/magic) Good luck and look forward to your nightly report(Now thats got to get you motivated!! :D)

Regards to you all

This evenings results are in.........

1 x £15: 6 weekly
1 x £24: 6weekly
1 x £11 :6weekly
1 x £12 :6weekly
1 x £32 :4weekly

1 x quote for a driveway
3 x quotes for addtional window cleaning + fascias/sofitts

Not as good as yesterday numbers wise, but its all relative.Targetted an area with larger houses and older customers in very posh area
.There were a lot more outs due to good weather and some of the houses had the lovely old intercom system which you stand a cat in hells chance of getting past.
One more day to go tomorrow and I should be close to 17/18 new customers-2 off my original target of 20 but I have lost one day to to new work coming in.
Hope you all had a good day if you were out as well 8)

Regards
Roy

Do you have any promotional flyers and leaflets when you go out or is it just face to face chat?
You are doing brilliant especially for day time canvassing.

Hi Granny & Jonny
Thanks for your kind words
I always have a wad of leaflets on me when canvassing as well as face to face. You can always stick one'in the box' if no one home and its a good presenter to show potential customers who might not have seen wfp before.

Canvassing-Day 3
Showered and shaved
Clothes freshly laundered and ironed after a couple of sweaty days on the hoof
Shoes re-polished
Of out at 1030 this morning after coffee pit stop
1 x quote for a driveway clean before I hit the door bells
Plan to go till about 16:30 today but will play it by ear

The reason I canvass during the day(and it might swim against the tide of popluar canvassing thought about late afternoons and evenings) is that I seem to always catch the women home. They are usually the decision makers about window cleaning and I'm pretty confident with talking to the fairer sex(doesnt hurt to flirt a little sometimes-but not overtly so)
I hope I'm not boring too many of you who have been there and done that.I just wanted to show a real time example of what it takes to push a business on that I have built from scratch.
Its not about boasting how brilliant(or otherwise) I am, but I hope that it might give you all some encouragement to keep grinding away at the coal face.My partner calls me The Terminator,as I'm relentless at canvassing and chasing down new work and so far so good
I also wanted to show the guys who are dithering about expanding, what you are going to have to do to make the numbers work.
We have just taken on our latest(part time)employee and hope to make him full time in 6 months. This is the reason I have challenged myself to get out there as I need to pay his wages.I'm also responsible to the rest of my team and their families to make my business work(as well as my own)
I wish you all luck in your own endeavours and I know that some are happy being sole traders. But if your ever wondering if you can make the jump to being a 'boss' I hope that my small adventure encourages you to do so

Kind regards
Roy

Good evening all-apologies for the late post(family bbq at short notice :))
well,my tally for the day is a paltry 2 new cleans.

1 x £20 :6 weekly(plus all the weather boarding to the house)
1 x £15 :6 weekly
I did say it would be warts an all!!!
A really tough day-4 hours in sweltering heat and a lot of knock backs.I congratulate the window cleaner in the area I was in- he has got it sewn up nice and tight(despite my most devious efforts ;D)
So.my total for the week is 16 new cleans-a great reward for my business and I know that because of all the add ons we do,that the return will be huge in the fullness of time.
My lovely lady has decided to reward me anyway, despite me being short of the promised 20 mark 8) 8) so its win/win all round
We will be cleaning all our new work over the next 5 days and pursuing all the quotes written up too
I hope that I have given you some positive thoughts to grow your own business and thank you all for your kind comments(esp. IanW/W-magic,Colley614 and Johnny)
I'm on the tools now for a couple of weeks as my guys are now entering holiday season.
I hope that I feel motivated enough to do this as an excercise again for you all soon(I can hear the groans allready!!)

Happy hunting
Regards
Roy :)

There's a famous old quote-it's not personal ,it's business.
You got to do what you got to do I guess.
I see everything as fair game ,near/far whatever -I have a responsibility to my family and that's all the motivation I need .
I hung up all my hang ups a long time ago.
This may seem a bit derisory but this is what gets me going every day and I make no apology for it
But yeh,bit awkward bumping in to your custys in tescos  :)

well done to all who took part in this bit of fun.
Knowing you were all watching really got me out there on the streets- hope it was the same for you

My final tally on the week was 19 as we picked up two more(1 x £14/6 week:1 x £15/6 week) when we were cleaning our new ones
Just one short of my target and the bottom line of business looks a tad healthier

Enjoy the rest of this lovely weekend-heading to the coast for an icecream and a beer 8)
