Today, I changed from standard garden hose, to 6mm microbore. Ive just tested to make sure its all still working fine, and its not ???
Yes, ive got water coming out the brush head, but the pump is now cutting about every 10 seconds, then back on again. I can only persume this is down to the smaller hose pipe, and the pump is thinking the water flow has been stopped.
Is it fine to leave it as it is, or will it damage the pump???
Cheers

are you using a flow controller
-
No, not yet. When im using garden hose, it doesnt cut out at all.
Would turning the allen key pressure switch up or down on the pump make any odds?
-
James u can take the screws out the top of the pump on the pressure switch and check for any obstructions and then screw it all back down only takes 2 mins.
Failing that unreal all the hose and see if its still doing it.check connections etc all the obvious stuff.
-
what pump are you using mate mine is a flowjet and i dont think it even has a flow controller, do you hasve a pressure switch (big grey switch ) ?

Im sure everything is ok, its just the fact that its small hose (6mm) and the pump cant push out what it wants to quick enough.
-
You can adjust the pressure switch I believe.
-
Yes pressure switch setting needs adjusting I would think. ;)
-
And this pressure switch is the little allen key screw at the top of the pump yeah? (can you tell i aint got a clue ) ;D
-
yes mate that will be it

This happened to me last week and all it was was the battery needed a good charge . I've got split relay but only good enough if your doing loads of miles.
-
Should me turning the switch down a bit not cure it, is it gonna be an issue if I leave it as it is, or will Idamage the pump? Like I said, i am getting a constant flow
-
It is possible that the smaller bore hose is increasing pressure in the system. It may be that the pump pressure switch is kicking in as the pressure builds up.
The pump is trying to run full out so depending on the PSI and litre per minute flow rate, the pump is trying to push the same volume of water through a smaller hose this leads to pressure build up and the pump pressure switch stops the pump.
what size pump are you using PSI and Litre per min?
Long term you may burn out the pressure switch, As already suggested here you can adjust the pump pressure switch, consider a controller or revert to the larger bore hose.
It is also possible as suggested that the battery is in need of a charge.
-
also if you have a strainer check that its not blocks with poop from the tank... i had the same problem a few weeks ago so i bought a flow controll £50.. and relised it was just a £9.00 strainer

I would echo Ians comments, the small bore creates back pressure and the feeble pressure switch will be taking some hammer, best solution is to fit a controller or at least fit a bypass if you intend to continue using 6mm hose. The pump is desinged to use 1/2 inch hose and thats why it worked fine until you changed the bore of the hose; best use 8mm on a hose then reduce to 5or6 mm for the pole hose.
-
you have reduced the bore size, therefore the pressure is much greater, in this case too much.
If you have a pressure switch on your pump, then reduce it.
Your best bet is to buy a flow controller, and remove the pressure switch on your pump alltogether
-
Adjusting the pressure switch won't help - the flow rate will still be higher than the hose bore can handle so it'll still cycle the pump.
-
Thanks for the replys. Im satisfied that I need a varistream. Hopefully ill have one in a couple weeks so all should be fine.
-
Check the battery. It may need charging.

Im running straight from van battery, so sure thats ok. Im never stopped using the pole for more than an hour without driving somewhere so it should recharge itself?
-
Have you tried adjusting the pressure switch yet. It is the first thing I would do. I have an Aquatec pump and it pushes water through 100m of 8mm hose no probs.

Ive tried ;D
Ive tried allen key size 1.5... too small
Ive tried allen key size 2...too big.
??? ;D
-
Best try a 2mm one then ???
-
I have... i need a 1.75 ;D
-
Strange, my 2mm fits perfect.

Hi
You are better off buying a leisure battery to run your pump and putting a split charge relay between your van battery and your leisure battery, so you can charge your leisure battery from you alternator. You must remember your van battery is not designed to run at a constant current without your van running, it is designed to start your vehicle and then your alternator takes over, a leisure battery is designed to run at a constant current.
-
you do not need a flow controller, or new battery or anything else, just get an allen key that fits, turn the system on and let the water flow and turn the key until it flows without cutting out, that easy, anti clockwise should do it ;)
-
deffo pressure switch i use 5mm id hose and i never have a problem just check there are no kinks and wind the pressure switch up
-
Don't most guys who don't use a controller have a bypass system fitted instead? I've always used a controller myself.
Otherwise your pump will run flat out all the time on maximum flow.
-
It will still run flat out if you use a by-pass and no controller.
-
It will but not on the glass and no need for the pressure switch to stop the pump.
