Title: Dark Lines on Stair Carpet
Post by: Nick Meese on April 16, 2012, 06:00:48 pm
Hi Guys
I'm new to the business and have invested in new machinery, training, etc etc. Have completed my first few jobs with some excellent results.
Cleaned a stair carpet last week, looked good when i left and gave the customer a courtesy call the following day. He said a few lines dirty lines had appeared on the carpet. Obviously i have arranged to go back and re do the stairs.
I'm just wondering before i go if i should be doing anything specific or is this just a case of recleaning the area?
Best Wishes
Nick

From time to time doing stairs you can get a wick effect it has happened to me a couple of times, as i understand it you can have dust collect under the nose of the carpet on the stairs and sometimes on the tread, when cleaning it can appear to clean well, but i have seen it myself, as it dries the soiling wicks to the surface the two times it happened to me was on a very worn carpet, i had vacuumed thoroughly first but made no difference, its a disaster waiting to happen and not something you can avoid.
Of course it could be something totally different.

Dirty lines - probably not overlapping enough.
If you clean east to west all the way along then north to south over the stair lip you shouldn't get that problem

Could be dust from underneath, or even the underlay breaking up and going dusty, getting sucked through.  Sometimes the stair nosings don't clean up 100% because they're the bits that get the worst wear & tear.  Also you have to remember the carpet pile is being pulled apart as it goes over the rounded nosing... there will be bigger gaps between the pile, which makes it look darker and it's not actually dirty at all.  Looking at it from above rather than in front will tell you.

I have found that the hand tool spray pattern is not even and will leave stripes at the edges.
I usually thoroughly spray the tread evenly with the hand tool not vaccing and then dry vac. The enables you to get an even pattern. I do the same on upholstery.
