Or is it just a job that you get on with?
As a whole I'm ok with it, but I can't think of a better place to ask this question other than this window cleaning forum.
Have a good weekend,
Dean.

I find working for a commercial cleaning company that are run completely wrong can be very, very distressing. But working on your own work is very relaxing

Wow,
That's another story where you may have done full circle and gone down that route. I can't fault you though mate.
Who did you work for?

Unfortunately I'm on my second lap of the circle. I've gone from working for a local commercial window cleaning firm to starting up on my own. Then having a company subbing me loads of work pulling the carpet from under my feet so I had to sell my gear to another of their subbies and looking for a job ( I think this is what they where planning behind the scenes as the subby and the boss of the cleaning firm where friends.) Now I'm back working for another local firm but really want to get stuck into doing my own work.

^^^ same as ..... Very bored , days can get a bit frustrating but then again I could be back working in the same factory that I worked in for 20 yrs making overpriced sofas with the only thing to show for it was knackered knuckles and seriously bad back ;D

I am never distressed by window cleaning. It's some of my customers who drive me round the bend.
In England, 14 years in the game, very rarely had any problems. Here in Ireland 8 months, AAARRRGHHH!!!!
John.

All i need is to go back 5 yrs to my job in a call centre on £8 hr, so i can realise how good ive got on £30-£70 per hr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I'm up again early on a Saturday morning, distressed as, conna sleep, it's killing me. I need out, or start drinking again.
-
After all the things I had to put up with of the last 5 years of my printing career I can honestly say I love what I do now.( 3 years in)
Sure things do still really get on my nervous and I do worry but having a fantastic Mrs behind you that helps.
My chill time is with my family and going to see QPR , that lately after a great set of home wins is very enjoyable.
Try and take some time out Dean.

distressed?window cleaning (once you ve got a solid customer base with some great jobs)has got to be one of the least stressed businesses to run!!
the only time ive been distressed was when i fell off my ladder(twice!).when the ladders slipped an inch then stopped!and when i fell through a flat roof many years ago(both feet through the plaster in kitchen ceiling!!).
WFP has made this job so much less hazardous.its a breeze in the park compared to trad only.
working in mainly affluent areas and the leafy suburbs makes it a pleasure to go to work on a nice day!! ;) ;D ;D

Yes sometimes its 5h1t

So easy its boring really. The only thing I find sad but not really distressing is when the customers die. I had another one this week. She was a nice lady, always out in her garden. Gradually all my customers are going the same way because of the age profile of my customer base.

Yep how true any custies who upset me go in the bin, and i only work in nice areas now easy to park no looking over my shoulder thinking i might get mugged, or looking at that drunk or looney going by wonder wether he's gonna blow up.
That's the good thing with this job you pick who you work for, where you work and with in reason how many hours you work.
Hardly ever missed a school play, christmas carol singing, parents evening for my 6 yr old daughter, to me that is worh it's weight in gold.
I to use to work in the printing industry which use to be a well paid job but quite stressful working to deadlines, taking orders from managers who had no idea of the industry.
Also even the work mates could be fun there was a lot of back biting over wages, who was on what.
If i feel lonely a 10 min chat to a custie perks me up.
Amazing the people you meet in this job doctors, lawyers, jp's, old war hero's, and gorgeous women.

the cleaning is fine. staff on the other hand can be very very distressing for me. they are a source of real stress :P

There's an interesting study been done on occupational stress; they studied a bunch of air traffic controllers, which was typically thought of as a high stress occupation.
The findings were that some air traffic controllers were stressed, and some weren't.
This shows that the job isn't inherently stressful in itself, it was the air traffic controllers reaction to their job that created the stress, i.e. the stress is internally caused, it's not from their job.

interesting Tosh....but tell that to a bomb disposal officer or such like

Some people find a job stressfull while others don't. Some people like stress and for them it's a healthy way to be, while others find it the opposite.
We're not all the same and just because two different people do the same job, doesn't mean they're both suited to that job.
It has nothing to do with Buddhism or studies that show this, that or what ever.
It has to do with people being different and horses for courses and not 'one pair of trousers fits all sizes' and then just adjust how you think about it to make them fit.

This is a very interesting thread.I find this a really good business but very boring with not many challenges.I also find theirs not much respect out there for our industry.I am a diabetic for 30 years and this puts me under a lot of pressure which add to my daily stress.
-
Like Ross and Tosh have suggested...it's more the person than the situation..
Window cleaning is lets face it, pretty casual in the main...for me the part that made me stressed was the thought of doing it when I am in my 60s'...now I am working on another business for myself (homebased) I am happier knowing that whilst I clean windows I am working to provide another income stream for the future.
Good luck to all.
Cheers
Dave.

Start when I want - Eat when I'm hungry - Go home when I've had enough
The secret in life is is not he least bit new - It's not doing as you like - but likening what you do

dave thats my issue right now as well. biggest concern is still doing this when is 60 to 70. its fine now in my twenties when i can work fast but it'll be a nightmare in 30 years time and thats not even considering how bored i'll be of looking at windows. considering heading back into education part time- best of both worlds for me
-
g.brookes your worried about what your gonna do in 30 years time and your in your twenties?ruddy hell lad!what happened to the arrogance of youth and the feeling your gonna live forever??maybe it was the drugs i was taking when i was in my twenties!!but i had the attitude live fast die young!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D
im 40 now!hopefully ive got another 30 years left of window cleaning then part time until im 80 then retire!! ;D ;D ;D
i know a guy whos 66 and still running up ladders every day and balancing on sloped roofs!i knew a guy who was still on ladders in his early seventies.he d do a morning and then go to the pub around 1pm for a few pints then home!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
truthfully i reckon 20 years and ill be knackered at 60!! :( :( :( :(
-
g.brookes don`t worry about 60- 70 it will sort its self out. As you get older you will need less and the growth in your business will give some money to invest in other things just don`t start to late.I am 62 years old and can do this job easily I am happy with what |I take home.So don`t worry it will just kill you early. ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
see! exactly! its my nature to look far into the future. you say you see people running up ladders in their sixties but you dont see them moaning to their wife all evening begging for a massage! i know you cant have everything- was talking to a customer today saying it seems to be a toss up between sitting in an office stressing your self out, losing all your hair, or doing a manual job where there is little stress but its really bad for your body.
i know for a fact that it being 60-70 wont sort its self out, especially with how many of us there will be at that age
