I don't understand the fortnightly cleaning either. I would much prefer to clean windows less frequently and charge a premium rate for them.

My guess is that it's more about habit than need.  Many of the northern towns had heavier industries than in the south and more obvious pollution (coal dust etc.).  Therefore the windows needed cleaning more frequently.  The industry has gone but the habit remains - and it's affordable for many because the orices tend to be lower than in the south.

its more of a city thing
In Liverpool it happens a lot,i am guessing it goes back to the days when a guy would walk his round with his ladder and just literally wipe the windows and you paid a £1.00 or two or what ever the currency was in days gone by an he would repeat this over a two week cycle.
a lad i know in St Helens does this as well as some in Widnes

and also as the post above as stated

i read about this in an old window talk mag in the eighties, the federation has been going since 1947 so they should have an idea as to windows being cleaned every two weeks

I think oooop north they remember in the olden days how smearing faeces on the glass used to stop burglars but it meant needing to clean the glass more often; either that or they still do smear faeces on the glass and the consequences of that are obvious for all but them ;0)

As I said pick up loads of there's lately, 5 jobs Thursday afternoon, they miss windows and don't clean the frames. Customers are comin out and see the work I do then look at there house, then ask for the price  ;D

most of my customers are fortnightly thats how i get away with bumping them coz they are still clean, only 7.00 clean so that makes it 14 pound a month :D

Heard a story of a 2 weekly guy from St Helens who when it rained and customers were out working would go around just wiping the bird c rap off windows that needed it then go collect his money in the evenings  ;D

It keeps the prices down. I clean the majority of my round three weekly, with some monthly ones that are further afield.

When I see people stating minimum prices of £10 I'm not surprised they are done six or eight weekly.

I had a customer with a three bedroom house and conny ask how much I charged and was suprised to discover I was half the price of the £16 they had been paying.

It wasn't undercutting just realistic.
