Ordered some leaflets from Vista print and have been charged VAT on them.
Leaflets are vat free so should be no vat charge.
Emailed Vista but got auto response along lines of I need to claim vat back ?
Anyone else had this ?

What make you think leaflets must be VAT free.

I was led to believe leaflets are VAT free

Regarding VAT on the printed material, the rules in the UK are quite complicated. HM Revenue and Customs classifies most printed items, such as postcards, posters and promotional stationary, at its standard rate of VAT (17.5%), but there are some notable exceptions.
In general, leaflets & flyers are VAT-free unless one of the following is applicable:
If an area of your leaflet is designed to be written on by customers it is likely to be classed at the standard rate for VAT.
Mentioning a discount promotion, such as “20% off when you show this leaflet”, means that the leaflet is classified as a voucher and VAT of 20% must be paid.
Mentioning “free entry with this flyer” results in the flyer being classified as a ticket so VAT must be paid.
Leaflets designed to be shown in shop windows are classified as posters and become eligible for VAT.
Finally, the use of thick paper or card, or laminating the leaflet results in HM Revenue and Customs determining that the leaflet is designed to be retained by the recipient, resulting in it being classified at the standard rate of VAT.
Some printing companies will still look to charge you VAT on leaflets and flyers even when they are classified as being exempt from VAT. Knowing the rules can help you negotiate a better deal for yourself.

virtually everything you buy has VAT added to it!!its 20% not 17.5% by the way.i really notice the difference when buying online then you get to the checkout and they add £60-£70 to the final cost! ??? ???
thats why ive put a load of customers prices up and take on new work at higher prices.
if you really look around we re all absolutely taxed up to the eyeballs on most things.thats life im afraid!! :( :(

Maybe include a brief summary of how WFP works, register yourself as a WFP tutor and classify the leaflet as educational material. I think that's VAT free (although the rules aren't straightforward).

i must have rattled off 50000 leaflets this last winter, burnt out 2 cheapo printers doing it too! luckily they are under a yr old so got given a new under guarantee. one thing for sure is i absolutely hate printing,so glad i never went for a printers job in the past
lord knows what it all cost me,i got good at buying paper in Bulk in Staples i do know that

Bobby all you need now is a continues supply ink system it works on a 100 ml per colour supply and saves a fortune on ink.THE BIG ADVANTAGE OF PRINTING YOUR OWN LEAFLETS YOU CAN CHANGE THE DESIGN ACCORDING TO NEEDS.

Recently got leaflets made up by printing.com. Tells you on their website leaflets are vat exempt but business cards aren't.
-
vista print is not a UK company. there are based in Netherlands. you can get much better deal from fairprint on ebay or solopress( expensive but very quick and efficient).

I reckon its cost you a lot more money in ink alone by printing the leaflets yourself.
If you order a large quantity of leaflets from a printing company they work out extremely cheap.
Sometimes it makes me wonder how they can afford to produce them so cheaply.

I got a load done by http://www.iloveflyers.co.uk/pages/flyers.aspx
They're good quality, didn't charge vat, and free delivery.
