Post by: john63. on March 17, 2012, 11:58:34 am
Been window cleaning about a year now it,s ok not the best job in the world. recently bumped in to a few old workmates and when i tell them what i,m doing they seem a bit shocked as if its the lowest of the low.I dont think some people think you can make a good living from it. I,m not bothered im sticking at it.

if your trad and not very well established then this job can be indeed crap!!esp if your struggling to find enough work but once you have a good customer base, wfp etc youll go from strength to strength BUT ONLY IF YOU HAVE THE RIGHT ATTITUDE TO YOUR WORK!!

BEST WISHES

yeh i'm a trad at the moment which i'm more than happy with but can deffo see the benefits of having a wfp system... will deffo be looking to get one as soon as i have funds and am ready to upgrade my van

i dont care what people say i love my job and think there is alot more decent down to earth people in this trade then people like to think! i'd much rather be able to go out and have a good days work in the fresh air by myself and then come home and have a chat to some like minded folk on this forum than be stuck in the same 4 walls of an office 9-5, mon-fri listening to the same people drain the life out of me  ;D

There's no way that I could do it.

Until 18 months ago I ran the sales department of a large Toyota Dealer and was basically second only to the owner, company car, fuel and £45'000 a year ... but I hated it .. made me a miserable git and never knew when it was going to be my last day as car sales is hard and only as good as your last months performance.

I sort of come across this business after my windie stopped coming as I was a crap payer - not intentional just very very busy working all the time and no time to do the little jobs like paying the windie (if he had standing orders I wouldnt be typing this now)

anyways I jacked in nice paid job with about 40 customers to my name and EVERYONE laughed at me in the Toyota garage and all said I would be begging for my job back - they were all wrong ... ok not earning £45k but well happy and well on my way to earning at that level - eventually- ... Toyota garage have laid off staff including some that laughed at me ... so fook them and fook your so called mates ... just keep at it and do your own thing  ;)

Ian, I have a similar background - I was a Business Manager in several main dealerships. Worked ridiculous hours, every weekend - practically missed the first 3 years of my sons life.

When I said I was leaving to clean carpets you could see the look in peoples eyes, thinking you must have a screw loose.

Fact of the matter is, whether your cleaning carpets, windows, or selling million pound properties - you're running a business, the fact that its cleaning windows is only incidental.

I also left working as a sub contractor for Toyota. I spent 3 years travelling around the country and to be honest enjoying the work but never saw my mates and wifes plus I wanted to start a family. So I left working for Toyota and started up.
Never looked back..

a friend of mine packed his job as a sparky . and i thought he was barmy until about a year ago when i saw him and he had a brand new toyota pick up.  his wife had a brand new people carrier. and i was struggling as a builder not knowing when the work was coming in . so ended up working for him and after the first day i knew i had to go alone so i did and loving it . still has drawbacks but im glad im doing it

That's the attitude here in Ireland as well. I've been asked if I claim dole, (well I am trad so no surprise there  ;D), and if I am making a living (the recession is brutal here and people who are entitled to benefits here wait many months to get anything and have to beg, steal or borrow to survive).

Seven months in from starting from scratch I am nearing my first year's targets.  :)
