Title: Pat testing
Post by: CLEANEAST CARPETS on January 05, 2006, 04:13:35 pm
Where do you guys have your pat testing done?
Do you use your supplier or an electrician?
What does it cost to have done?
Does it apply to everything electrical that you use?
Is it annual?
What would happen if you didn't have the equipment tested?

Thanks  Barbara

A good supplier will PAT test your appliances on their service intervals. It is usually cheaper at a local electricians but its negligable.

If you are employing operating staff then for liability reasons it makes sense to get this done bi-annually. However if you are an owner operator then you dont need to be quite as belt and braces unless you're really hammering your kit. You are more likely to take good sensible care of your own equipment than somebody who hasn't had to pay for it.

PAT testing needs to be done at least annually. Like everything in business its all fine till something goes wrong...cover your arse at all times.
If a customer was to get a shock off your machine and at worst die and you haven't had it tested you could be in big trouble. If it has been tested then it is down as accidental.

Hi Barbara,

I use a supplier who charges me £4.50 per item less if you've got multiple items.
The rest i'd agree with John on.

I hold my hand up to giving not entirely the best advice. The previous two posts are right. What's a few quid for peace of mind and part ensuring a safe working environment!

Pat testing should be carried out every year by law, if you have a employee using your equipment even if it is a vacuum cleaner or an electric drill, You will be out of complience with your insurance policy if you do not have the test done
