How much experience in carpet cleaning do you have?
The smaller the machine (Maxi)the hard it is to clean and wetter the carpet will be therefore an experienced carpet cleaner can make a good job from lesser equipment causing no damage and getting a good result.
The larger or more powerful machines make it easier to clean as they leave carpets drier so therefore making it easier to clean with hence less experience needed.
Belgium Wiltons are a very shrinkable carpet an experienced carpet cleaner would winse at cleaning one with a lesser powered machine although it an be done.
IMO I'd get some training either with a governing body or a fellow carpet cleaner, if your budget won't stretch then I'd go on ebay loking for a 2nd hand one just be careful.

very basic spec for £1200 ?
For 1400 u get an an alltec express with twin vac and 3000w heater
or a little more for the bigger elite if you need more tank capacity .

so what machine do you reckon would be best.
this was the one sombody from a comany that sells them told me would be good for my wife as she does not have a van and you can get this in a hatch back.
and light enough for her to cary around.

22 kg for the maxi .... 28 kg for the express ..
The maxi splits in two or something so may suit , depending on the car and what your wife is willing to carry .
There is nothing ' wrong ' with the maxi , it says it now features a single vac motor with the power of two .. ( 1600w two stage ) chances are thats an ametek 7.2 or a slight chance the 6.6 , although im sure they'd be shouting about if if it was ....
anyway , i means it has the power of two low powered vacs , cause no matter how you add it up neither comes close to two 5.7 three stages .
The express is a superior machine , but its up to you on the practical / weight side .
