How do you know she has got alzheimers? Why so quick to blame it on that nasty condition!
Maybe she was just confused. Maybe she had got quotes from others and got mixed up.
Did you give her a written quotation a couple of weeks ago when she booked?
In all honesty if she has got Alzheimers you were lucky she remembered you were coming.

Can be painful at times in these situations.
I've had a few over the years, one who sat back down on the settee the second I'd done the last pass on it.
I've had one who called us back because in his words it was dirtier than when we'd arrived, so I thought I'd better go and check that out. Only turned out to be pile reversal but do you think he was having any of it? Not one tiny bit of it as I even did the white towel test as he broke into a rage of 'C' words, 'F' words as he forced us out of his bungalow.
There's been a few others too but those two stick well and truely in the memory.
The thing is when they phone you up and book you in it's hardly part of the patter "Do you have alzheimers or any other condition that is going to cause issues."

Seems a bit harsh, he's a carpet cleaner, not a Doctor. Most of us would probably have assumed such a customer had Alzheimers or at least some other form of a memory dysfunction.... ::)

Me, being a soft touch at times, as soon as I realised she was confused, I'd have probably took the £4.50 and let her off with the rest....
Don't tell all the old dears round here that though, they'll all be on the band-wagon..... ;D
-
Do you travel Colin??
I have 20 old dears who's carpets need cleaning, and they all have memory problems, so......
To save you any grief.... you pop up here and clean the carpets then I will pay you the £4.50 for each one...
That way we are all winners you get to feel good about yourself for a good deed done, and Gladys has her carpets cleaned by a very nice man.... ;D ;D ;D ;D

As long as you pay the fuel costs, 10 pence each way, you gotta a deal..... ;D ;D ;D

Sorry if it seemd harsh but as you said he's a carpet cleaner and not a doctor so how does he know?
It could be quite easily a genuine confused mistake by her, and if he could have been bothered to go through it with her, shown her the written quote etc etc and explained it all then the outcome may have been different. If he does send a bill and the daughter gets involved, this will be really embarrasing for the old lady, who is doing her best to live in a modern world and at worst the daughter could kick off and accuse OP of being a rip off merchant :)

She might just be a clever old bugger.

This is probably why I would have just let it go... See, I'm kind to a fault..... :)

If I do a quote over the phone, when I get to the customer I show them the paperwork, and point out who to make the cheque payable to, and how much it is. Knowing that if there was a lack of communication as to the cost it, will be questioned/sorted even before I have brought one piece of equipment in.

I thought that too....... "i didn't get through the blitz for nothing you know" ;D ;D ;D

but this day and age the only "blitz" that most of the old dears got through was.............

This reminds of a time we were cleaning carpets around pass over in Stamford Hill London where there is a very large Hasidic Jewish community.
We were literally going from door to door cleaning carpets as at this time they get everything cleaned, I had just finished when a very old Jew approached me and asked if I had change of a tenner, as we were weighed down with cash (they only pay in cash) I gave him ten pound coins which he promptly put in his pocket and walked off with out giving me the tenner.
I had to walk after him tugging at his arm to get the tenner, at which point several Jews were shouting at me asking what I was doing eventually a crowd of them gathered around me and the old fella, lots of finger pointing going on etc until his son arrived laughing took his dad by the arm, and gave me the tenner informing me he always does this. :-\
It must have looked funny (or not) this big shaved headed geezer racing after a little old hasidic jew demanding he give me ten pounds ;D
-
