just starting out this carpet cleaning venture. looking to have some flyers designed.
I was thinking of putting on it, something like a free sample/demonstation.... where i would go into a client's house to give them a free demo, perhaps a square yard of carpet. to show what the results would be like...
is this a good move, or potentially a big time waster?
anybody ever done this?
opinions?
many thanks

Hi Ryan
The one square yard things smacks with clients of the old Kirby cleaner salesman. I'd be careful with that on domestic clients.
Commercial clients will expect you to clean a larger area as a demonstration. If it's a large enough potential job then we usually offer to do the whole Reception IF, AND ONLY IF they have already agreed that the price for the rest of the clean is what they are prepared to pay, ie they are likely to pay your price in future. The worst that happens is you get the odd one scam you for a free clean of the Reception and then says you're too expensive for the rest of the job. For those that think you're too expensive anyway, they don't get a free cleaning demo. There are other ways to play this too. If you're more expensive than others you can offer a demo clean and if the results are better than they expected, or usually get, then you get the rest of the job at the price agreed. OR you can even offer to do the clean for your higher price and if they genuinely can't see any difference between your clean and their usual contractor you will charge them what they usually pay. You have to be prepared to take a risk, you get stung now and again but has worked for us.

Personally offering a free demo is only worth it for commercial because of the large areas.
What i'm gonna do and people may think i'm stupid but do a free full room clean i'm gonna post cards or see if my local paper will do a free ad which gives me a good write up offering free rooms as a competition.
It's a way i'm gonna get in peoples houses and they may want extras while i'm there but if not and iv'e done a good job then i'm in there mind to call next time plus recommendations.
Cheers Phil.

Hi Phil
I'd be interested in how you get on with that idea and how the local paper promote it.

flyer have been around for decades if these ideas worked then we would know about it,
don't try and re-invent the wheel, a nice ad telling them what they want to know and put out in their 1000s is all you need

Thanks for the feedback chaps

If everyone in history had thought that Mike, we would still be in the stone age.....

You have to think outside the box .... to get in the box.. ;)

you have got the wrong end of the stick...
i'm not saying don't try them but that they have been tried and found in most cases not to work.... otherwise the people who tried them would have kept on doing them.
if we are using daft quotes....
a clever man learns from his mistakes....... a wise mane learns from the mistakes of others
we can try these ideas ourselves and learn they don't work or we can see they didn't work for other so probably won't work for us.
the other side of the coin is... if you want to know what works then ask the printer which leaflet is constantly re-ordered

The free demo idea has been around for yonks and is part of many marketing systems like Pirahna etc.
It works well for someone with experience who can do the whole house audit with knowledge and confidence.
Starting out try 3 for 2 offer or something like that with the word FREE in the title ;D
