I had a call from an existing commercial client today (following my e mailing a quote).
"That quote of £ 105.00. It does not sound right to me"
I went through the rooms with him and he said "I think it should be nearer £ 200.00" !!!!!!!!

When I was just starting out I was very unsure about my pricing and asking people for money and it took me time to find out about whipping edges.
Having repaired a rug for a wealthy 6 bed homeowner I thought I'd just add a tenner to cover my costs as I had considered it a worthwhile learning curve in itself onto the £6 cost of the whip.
When the client asked how much I owed him, I took a deep gulp and said as long as he was happy the price was £16.
His response....."We have a problem.................that's not enough..............you're going to have to negotiate upwards"
Being speechless is not something I am normally known for, but in the silence that ensued he pulled 3 ten pound notes out of his pocket and said, "£30. That's my final offer...take it or leave it!"
Rog
PS I've done an awful lot of work for him ever since that first encounter. :)

Best one i had was a job for a retired business loans adviser, he as you would expect had a good understanding of overheads for small business's, and actually advised me to charge a bit more, that was one of my first jobs, i thought i was charging a good rate. I wish all customers were like him.

Many years ago I did a job for £120, big old ex vicarage. The lady got her wallet which had a 1/4" thick wad of notes in it.
She gave me 6 notes, when I pointed out that it was £300 not £120 , said that she thought they were 20's.
Her husband was the biggest scrappie in the area. Done loads of work for the family since.
