Hi Guys,
have chance of costing a job but this particular place has a large glass tower type frontage, the type that is similar to B&Q's have, see Pic below.
Anyway the only way not to use ladders inside I can think of is hire a scissor lift, looked into hire aprox £100 for day + delivery ect, but also need a license at a cost of £200 one days training.
I don't think this would be cost effective as job would be too infrequent (I think)
Anyway the question I have is how do you incorporate all these extra costs into the job and still get custy to go ahead?
Any advice guys?
Cheers
Goochie.

just tell them if they want the job done safely a scissor lift is the only way to do it.
explain why they need it and risks of doing the job without 1 ie you falling of ladder etc.
-
If its scissor lift, you can get away without the training. We are ipaf, but have hired scissors before and used them, without being ipaf.
Depends how high you need to go and how much you need to manoeuvre it.
-
Thanks, did think about that, without training but Hirer's wont let them out without license round here.
Need about 7 metres I think.
-
you can also hire cherry pickers without a licence, HSS will just show you the basics, A cherry picker does not require a licence, it requires a certificate of compintence thats it. Ive got one this week and the fella told me this as i asked the question about going into HSS and just hiring one, he said they will just show you the basics. Im doing my scissor lift tomorrow with him

you need a licence to drive any of these machines, also insurance for using them and theft of them, although the hire company will hire them to you its your reasponsibillity to be IPAF trained, there are 3 ways to justify cost, one is to bite the bullet, as the licence lasts for 5 years youll have it for other jobs (= £40 per year), or 2, tell the custy you dont have a licence but will get one and the 1st cost of clean will be plus the training of said cherry picker, 3 say nowt and just get on with it and hope nothing happens, also check to see if they insist on other things like harness checked 6 monthly, although just realised you dont need haerness on scissor lift, another option may be trailer mount, cost about the same to hire but you can pick it up yourself to save on delivery if youve a car / van capable of pulling it, recommend a 4 x 4

As stated above you need to be trained IPAF.
HSS do not care about these licences they are a DIY hire centre - similar way they hire stand pipes ... again you can only use them with local authority licence - usually you have to use theirs.
Any company asking you to provide this type of service will expect you to have the proper 'ticket'. What happens if you have an accident in their workplace?
If you are not trained you will not be insured!
For inside work there is a 'special' scissor lift.. lower weight and smaller for access. But still need to be carefull with flooring due to weight. Why hire from HSS as they are so expensive ?
Why not approach local platform comp they will tell you best m/c etc. IPAF cost simply spread the costs over the cleans ;D

I'll state it again, you do not need a licence, unless that is the site your visiting insists on one. You will need to show competence on it, iPaf is what some sites ask for but it's down to the site wether they need them or not. you will need a harness, a fall arrest one for a cherry picker and a standard one for the scissor lift

happy to be proved wrong, but a licence is needed to use one, not to hire one maybe, but by hiring it they take it you are trained, how do you show competance on it?
-
With a certificate. As soon as mine arrives I'll send you a pic ;D not trying to be smart, ivejust finished a 3 day course doing it as the place I work (I've a full time job as well as my business) requires you have a competence certificate. I specifically asked the fella showing us if you needed a licence he said no. He also stated I'm now able to train others up. The fella is one of the top trainers at Linde
-
Personally I would not show anyone a competence certificate issued by HSS ;D for the fear of being laughed at ;D
The guys who work locally at HSS cant even set up a conservatory ladder let alone show anyone how to use a boom ;D
Our company insurance covers us as we are professionally trained IPAF (after which we are not qualified to train others!)but maybe others are different..

Where did I say I was trained by HSS?

If trained on your site then you can only work on that site,
With IPAF you can work on any site but training is still needed

You dont need a licence, by law to operate any powered access.. its like PPE, all sites/companies have different rules. Some require you to only wear hi viz vest, others require hat/gloves/goggles/vest/blah blah.
Powered access is the same, some sites dont need proof, others need a ipaf ticket before you can use any equipment. IPAF tickets arent a licence, they are a certificate of competency. IPAF is a training and competence company, they arent a licencing corporation. Told to me by the guy who trained me at IPAF.
Insurance, on the other hand, is another story alltogether. You can phone your PL insurance company and ask them to cover you for specific times, but im assuming your ins comp will want proof of training. Some hire companies (Not HSS) provide insurance but its very limited so ask as many questions as possible..
Or just chance it..Why not just get your IPAF licence? its a one day course, then your set for 5 years.. as mike said, spread the costs, then when you have your licence, you can go in for more high level work and make it pay..

until there is an accident, you guys carry on without a licence if thats what you want to do, may be ive been told differant, and you may not get asked asked for licence / ipaf but you will if theres a accident, then thats when i will be proved wrong, really for £200 is it worth the risk, i still think you need a licence, but if you guys think differant then go ahead,
-
Agree to disagree then as we all believe different. Btw I used hss as a example, i stated my certificate was carried out by Linde. Once I have my certificate I will post a pic up explaining what I can and can't do ok ;D

Hi Matt make your mind up ;D ;D
when you do a IPAF course you get a PAL ticket.... what does PAL stand for ;D ;D ;D
give that guy a smack ;D ;D
-
Mike, it might stand for licence but there is no law. It's a guideline.

I know mate just kidding ;D ;D thats be honest you have it, we have it, any one with any common sense would get it ;D
ps whats George on about ....you do an IPAF course you get PAL licence thats what you show people!

They are the same thing mate.. you get your PAL from IPAF when you do the course..
anyway, im sure if he wanted to do the job, he could find somewhere to hire the lift, and just crack on. or he could do the one day course, and do it all legit.
The only two options really... or hire a machine AND driver for the day and add all that to the final costing. simples ;D

Would the dragonfly system be a feasible alternative to powered access..?
