Got my van insurance from Aviva(without using a broker)phoned today to ask about adding a named driver, turns out for an extra £40 on top of my premium I can have an 'open driving policy'which means ANYBODY with a clean driving licence can drive my van, anyone trying to insure young drivers should give this a go.
-
Are you sure it is open for all drivers?
Check the small print to make sure it is not just insuring drivers 25+ or who have held a license for 8 years or longer.
Also check to see what it does to your excess. Usually it will increase your excess dramatically.
Seems like a good deal though if the above isn't true.

was going to say make sure you look into that.
I insured a young driver last year or year before and cost an extra £1600 :o so if this is true thats an awesome saving.
although I am swaying the small print will say 25+

The policy definately covers drivers of ANY age ;)
I now have my van insured for any driver

I also added courtesy van

I don't get it either tbh,my brother also uses aviva now(although he doesn't have a tank)he was £1600 with autonet last year,he had his son on the policy who is 19,he phoned Aviva and got it down to just over £800 with his son as a named driver,I told him to phone back and take his son off as a named driver asnd ask for the 'open driving policy'his quote is now down to £400.
My policy is due to start on the 18th so I will post again to confirm when my documents come through.
I have spoken to two operators at Aviva and both have said there is no age exclusion.

Got my Insurance certificate through today,it states on it that 'any driver no restrictions'can drive my van with my permission,it also states a modification-water tank, all for £470 :)

cheers ks, can you repost this in about 11 months time please ;D my son should have passed by then and I renewed last month

I called them and if I took my named driver off it went up 217. If I was to now add any driver over 25 it would go up 117. So if I took my named driver off an changed it to any driver it actually went up 334. Madness haha

It is madness,a have a theory that they use a random number machine like the one in countdown to calculate premiums. As I have said it states on my policy my van is modified with a water tank, yet others have been refused because of a tank ??? ???

I've noticed an anomoly with Aviva (Nourish Onion ;D) it seems that some of their teams and brokers don't communicate well with one another - some letting tanks go through as "non-modified" but declared and other throwing the biggest wobbly since a jelly got crossed with a helicopter and got a jellycopter.
Make sure you get the deal in writing and be prepared for the dawning of realisation to hit the underwriters part way through the year before renewal!

Spot on,it seems this open driving policy I was sold is not as described.Says on my policy my vans are insured for ANY driver,I double checked this before I took the policy out and all seemed fine. Now Aviva are saying that if someone is driving a van on a regular basis(could be as little as 1 day a month!)they have to be named which will add to the premium.I complained to a manager and after he went through all the recordings he agreed I was given bad advice when taking out the policy. As a goodwill gesture he has agreed to waive any additional premium for a named driver until renewal.

Hi there I'm 18 and been getting quotes around 1600 of I sell the van to my dad;) an he insures it with a open policy wich then covers me because I have a clean licience it means Im fully legal to drive the van whenever he says?
-
Anybody can drive it, aslong as they have their own fully comp insurance on their own vehicle.
That'll be the rules
