Title: First time canvassing i
Post by: Kwackers on February 08, 2012, 05:31:23 pm
Dropped into a few businesses yesterday to wet my feet, had one small private hotel potentially interested.

Been nervous about knocking did 2 hours today polite, smart. Most windows and frames were spotless and they said they had cleaners so got none in the end. I did do 12-2 though so thinking 3-7 might be the best bet and have another go tomorrow? thoughts

The more doors you knock, the closer you will get to achieving your goal. There is a canvaser on here (GD) who I believe knocks between 2 and 8, with a break at around 3-3:30 to allow for mums doing the school run. He does really well, and will probably see this thread and give you some sound advice.

All will agree it's a numbers game. If you get a lot of people saying there's already a window cleaner in the area, don't be put off. There are still plenty of people looking and having difficulty finding a good windy. Finally, there's no such thing as a patch, so again, don't be put off if you meet someone who tells you otherwise.

Best wishes,
John

Cheers Johnny.

I'm not too fussed on the whole patch idea, it is business after all. I'm not underpricing and I've tried to leave a card with everyone regardless, just incase the current windy gives up etc.

I had a run of doors with nobody in, typical the only one that answers is opposite a WFPer on a house and says "I've got one, that's him". :)

Everywhere i have gone i've been told there are loads of people knocking for business. Leaflets and people dropping by. Even in this weather!!! I helped a mate on his round and one of his customers had just had someone knocking. I didn't realise there were so many people trying to start like me. My town is Hitchin, North Herts.

Pretty rubbish really. Was a bit de-motivated after yesterday. Did another 1.5 hours and got nothing. one "poss in a few months" and one "I do them myself" was about as positive as it got. Also dropped 4-500 leaflets in the area and got nothing, so might just be an area that is sewn up, who knows. Not a promising start anyway.

stick at it mate, i promise it does get better, and every window cleaner on here will tell you about the joy and the pain.
Its a numbers game mate, the more you canvass, the more work you will get.
Feb is not a brill month for canvassing, cold dark, ppl paying off christmas still, ppl booking their summer hols etc.
One day you will have to turn work away mate

Thanks George.

On this topic I have spent hours canvassing in some places and got nothing. I've gone 5 minutes down the road and picked up £70 in work in an hour. This day sticks in my mind vivdly, its the day I learnt the trick to canvassing. Within 20 minutes of being in an area you can get an idea if its worth plodding on or jumping in the motor and shooting down the road. I also keep an eye out when cleaning windows for a few dirty houses to knock when I've finished.

I bet I'm going to get people asking why if I'm so good at canvassing am I using a canvasser and the truth is I want to focus on offering a high standard of service and not worry too much about sales. Don't get me wrong I'll be knocking doors myself but by using a canvasser I can work out a sales forecast and not worry to much about needing to get work in all the time.
